Bridal shower alternative games/ideas: remodelling the 1950's bridal shower

Molly&James, on October 31, 2017 at 11:15 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 26

I'm wanting to throw my sister a bridal shower, but I'd like it to entail normal activities that women LIKE doing together, that they'd do with out being forced into things like wrapping themselves in a toilet paper wedding dress or seeing who carries the most crap in their purse.

Does anyone have any good ideas on "games" or other activities to do at a bridal shower (or couples shower even)? This is 2017, not 1950, I think the whole bridal shower thing could use a major update.

My favorite bridal shower game is called How Many Drinks Can I Squeeze into Three Hours?

Yes, I'm with sleepythedwarf. I like showers that include a lot of booze.

LOL, my mom invented that game circa 1956. She won every time and passed the torch to my cousins and I Smiley smile

Fwiw, we never did the tp dress thing. Sometimes the purse thing or "closest to the date" (anniversary closest to the wedding date, birthday closest to bride and groom, etc.).

There's no law that says you have to play games. Women can have a good time eating, drinking and socializing- just like men. You will never see a group of men worried about what games to play when they get together.

For my shower my sister did a what woukd the bride say game (asked questions and guests had to guess my answer) and then a game where people had plastic necklaces and couldnt say certain words (I think bride or wedding) or someone could steal their necklace. Otherwise it was food, booze, and mingling. I do think the second game encouraged people to mingle and talk because they were trying to trio each other up.

One shower I was invited to (but sadly couldn't attend because I lived too far away), the hostess signed the group up for a cooking class. They were going to learn how to make a dish from the groom's heritage.

I agree with everyone saying no games are needed for a shower. Guests will have a great time mingling if provided with good food and good drinks.

I may have seen this idea on here - I'm pretty sure my shower is having a game where there will be photos of me and FH hanging up and everyone will guess where the photo was taken. The girls also asked on the invitation for everyone to bring a recipe which is mostly to help me with not having any good ideas for what to make. But, if you're not into games there's no rule that you have to have them.

We only played the necklace game at mine, where everyone got a necklace and if someone said "bride" or "wedding" whoever caught them saying it first got their necklace. It was played all throughout the socialization, and that was it. The person with the most necklaces won a bottle of wine.

I went to one that a bunch of photocopies of the bride(on regular printer paper) you had to draw her wedding makeup. They had so many crazy things to do it with. Glitter, regular makeup, markers, ect. She had to pick her favorite, the crazier the better. Then they had "who is it" ask a question like, who is more messy, who usually cooks.. The guests hold up a picture of the bride or groom.

Those didn't suck. There was plenty to drink so it got pretty fun.

My mom found some great wedding scratch offs, like two winners per pack or something. She used those to have gift card winners and who got to keep the tables centerpiece. Not a game, but she also did the best advice cards. Some of my faves included not to nag, and the one from my 7yo niece who said (with the cutest spelling) having a husband is hard, you have to cook and clean and you can't spend all their money! Another cute one was an emoji decoder. For example the snowflake and feet meant cold feet. I think we found it on Pinterest. Otherwise booze, lots of booze.

Not a game fan, but then, I'm not a shower fan to begin with. Have lots of fun drinks, some good food, speed through the presents and you're outta there.

You don't have to have games.

The last really good shower I went to just had good wine, good food and gift opening. It was wonderful.

You guys have some interesting game ideas!

I'm not a big fan of showers in general but I think with good planning they could be fun. I've actually never been to one that had booze, so I know that'll definitely be a game changer!

I'm completely open to no games, I just don't want it to be lame...like people sitting around not doing anything.

The one game I loved at my shower my sister asked DH and I to write 10 random facts about ourselves and then guests had to guess which one of us the fact applied to. It was a good way for our families to get to know us.

But in general, food and booze, especially since mine was held at a winery.

We had no games at my shower. Just everyone hanging out talking and eating and drinking and then I opened gifts. It was fun and casual.

Mine had a wine-tasting game which the host's husband whipped up for us--we had to guess the regions and types of wines we were trying. mostly it was fun because it involved wine. if you just keep the food and drink flowing, everything else will be fine.

Look on Pinterest for some ideas. My mom asked me to choose some games I would be okay w for my shower, because she knows I'm not really into most of them. I chose half a dozen or so that I found on Pinterest that were okay with me. She ended up doing one that's the purse thing and one with 10 pictures of me from different times and people had to guess how old I was in each picture. It was really cute.
