Bride price/Dowry

My culture requires the groom to pay a bride price before the lady is traditionally his wife. It could be any amount based on the brides father's decision. But some traditions have specific amount. Just wondering how it works in other cultures. Pls share.

If my FH had to pay a bride's price for me, he probably would have offered a goat! Lmao.

@Rachel: My ex-husband and I still joke that he owes me some goats based on our divorce. But I don't actually expect him to pay. ;-)

My dad thinks I am priceless so I am not sure he would know what to ask for! He will be walking me down the aisle to do the symbolic one life into another, even though FH and I have lived together for a few years. My parents are old fashioned so FH did ask my dad, but my dad didn't tell my mom so she was slightly upset that she was second to know...can't win!

My FH, did ask my dad for permission first, then he asked my kids. And they all was there when he asked me. My FH and I are paying for the wedding. Cause I don't think my 75 year old dad should. And he if walking with me. But short of that the whole who gives this bride away will be skipped.

Unfortunately...I don't really get a "cultural" experience for my wedding. My mom is Irish...so the big thing for our family is to make sure that our marriage is consumated and that there are babies as soon as possible....but not to be getting pregnant anytime before the wedding. My dad was adopted, so I've always said I could be anything. Yesterday, I was african-american (i know...silly right?). Today I've decided that I'm Russian Smiley laugh

I wish I could go with the traditional father giving away the bride, but in all honesty, I think it's kind of pointless to do that part without my actual dad being around. So, we're skipping it and having everyone walk themselves down the aisle to a hardcore metal song Smiley laugh

I think if FH had to pay a dowry....we'd be engaged for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time....we ain't got no money for that lol

Victoria: Yep, I'm also Irish, or at least half. (The other half is, basically, German.)

The camel thing is really a huge joke; nobody here actually does that--I mean, the Bedouin (desert-dwellers) might, but nobody I know would ever consider actually trading women and camels. Smiley winking
