Bride/bridesmaids on the right side - thoughts?

Casey, on June 24, 2018 at 8:47 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7
I’m getting married in November, and I really would like to stand on the right side. I have a terrible cowlick on my right side that looks like a bald spot and I know I will be so unhappy with my pictures if we do the ‘traditional’ (is it even traditional anymore?) bride & bridesmaids on the left side. My bridesmaid dresses also have a small cut out on the left side of the dresses that’s lace. My mom and sister are trying to convince me that it would look weird, it would mess up the way we walk, etc. but I’m honestly way more concerned about having a bald spot in all of my ceremony pictures than I am about ‘messing up the walk’. What are your thoughts? Has anyone done this? I know the tradition is based off religion, but neither of us are really churchgoers, so it’s not a big deal to us. Has anyone done this and maybe regretted it? Or didn’t do it and regretted sticking to tradition? I really want to hear all sides and opinions!

I think it would be fine as long as you get one (or more than one, people don't pay attention) of those "Pick a seat not a side" signs. That way all of his people aren't sitting on your side and people don't get upset. You could also spread word among heads of households that you know will turn up early so his Aunt Sally sits on the left and your Aunt Susie sits on the right and the rest of the family follows suit.

If you wanna go on the right then go on the right!
Up until this post I didnt even know that there were set sides?
The only difference for the walk is that instead of making a left when theyre done walking down the aisle, you guys will make a right. Thats it!

Yes! I found a sign on etsy that says ‘pick a seat, not a side; you are loved by both the groom and the bride’ and I really love that idea!! I think the only people that will actually choose a side will be our parents, but that makes sense to me.

Stand on whatever side you and your FI agreed upon. The tradition actually started because men carried a sword, most were right-handed, and needed to be able to draw their sword quickly, if anyone tried to kidnap the bride. Given that it is unlikely that your FI will carry a sword, the tradition is merely that- a tradition, not a rule or law.

Sit anywhere you want! Our venue coordinator said she had a B&G who "switched sides" so the groom would have the more direct sun in his face so the bride wouldn't have to squint! Smiley winking She's also had parents who "switched sides" so they had a better view of their "child's" face during the ceremony.... I think this is really a personal choice. Smiley heart

Please realize that the person doing your hair needs to know you have a cowlick and then she/he can plan accordingly and ensure that you do not have a bald spot. In addition, you can do what you want just realize if you have a large amount of guests that are over 40-50 they may be confused as to why you are in the right and you may get asked a million questions as to why you did that.
