brides married to Latinos! name change

Jessica, on December 10, 2019 at 5:53 PM Posted in Married Life 0 7

Hi all

I just wanted to check if there's anyone going through the same problem as me.

My husband is from Brazil and he has 2 last names (not hyphenated). That's how it is in our marriage license. I just changed my last name on SS and only had to use one of the last names but now I'm having the hardest time with the DMV. They keep saying that my name has to be just like it is in our marriage certificate. Can anybody help? If you went to a DMV on Dade/Broward/PalmBeach County and didn't have any issues please let me know. Thanks.

Uhhhh I would check Florida laws but I am not too well versed. Some states do not even allow for changing maiden name to middle name. I would call another DMV and ask the protocol. Hyphens I know they allow.

My ex husband had the same issue. The first last name is their moms maiden name and second is their dads last name. The kids in latin countries take both last names. You should only be taking the second last name, not both. That’s why it isn’t hyphenated Smiley smile if it was, then you’d take both.

I know that! The social security office was fine with that but DMV says I have to take both even though my social only has one

I knew you would probably know, but maybe others just don’t, for whatever reason. That’s insane! Social Security office is good, but DMV isn’t. I’d go back to the DMV and hopefully get someone else? Lol

I know for the state of NY - whatever is on the marriage license as your surname is what has to be on your license. :/ i hope this all works out for you
