Brides to be with dermotillomania?

Kate, on January 29, 2018 at 12:46 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 9

Hi all!

I have suffered from dermotillomania since I was in college. For a long time I didn’t know there was a name for what I did! For me specifically, I pick at bumps on my face, shoulders, and arms, usually until they bleed, and then pick at the scabs. For me it is definitely related to stress, although if I notice anything on my face I will go to town on it. My acne isn’t really that bad but everything seems to be multiplied because my face is always red and scarred up from the picking. I went to the dermatologist who prescribed me antibiotics for the acne, but I don’t think they’re working. I’m going back tomorrow to see if there’s another course of action we can take, because even if just the tiniest pimple is on my face I will pick at it!!

Any brides out there have the same issues? What are you doing to help??

I don't suffer from this but if its a compulsive action, you might want to go talk to a therapist/psychologist about the underlying cause. I would figure once you're face is cleared up you'll just find another reason to pick if you don't solve why you are picking.

    Hoping you get some relief.

I actually have the same thing! Not so much on my face (though I do pick at my face) but on my scalp. I will pick my scalp until it bleeds, wait for it to scab, and then pick off the scab. Are you seeing a therapist? For me therapy helped me to learn ways to manage my anxiety and learn mindfulness. I would find myself picking for almost a half an hour without even noticing I was doing it. Cultivating a daily practice of mindfulness was helpful for me in being able to notice what I was doing sooner, stopping myself, and finding something else to do.

This is actually a compulsive behavior so you should maybe see a psychologists or possible a psychiatrist. They will help you discover if there is an underlying problem and others was to manage stress and anxiety. They might give anti-anxiety mess. Good luck!

I had this! Possibly still do but not that bad. I suffered from TERRIBLE acne from age 11 to 17, I saw a dermatologist the whole time but nothing they had me use cleared it up completely. The breakouts carried out from age 18-22 but not as bad. I got so sick of only seeing my face, arms and back with pimples for soooo many years that I used to pick at them in hopes to make them disappear, but I'd do it so much that I'd have scabs on my face. I'm 24 now and I've gotten my skin to clear up A LOT, so I've convinced myself to not pick at it if I get a pimple here or there because I'm proud of the progress I've made. It's really hard because it became a habit, but I'm finally breaking it. Playing with something squishy to relieve stress when I want to do it helps a lot.

Keep in mind new treatments take 4-8 weeks to work, so you really can't know if your new medicine is working until 2 months have passed. To keep my skin clear I'm using St Ives grapefruit face wash, Neutrogena pores refining toner, I exfoliate 3x a week, and I alternate clearsil and pore refining moisturizer each night. I also use Bare Essentials Blemish Remedy primer and Neutrogena Skin clearing foundation every day at work.

I didn't know this was a thing but me! I have picked at my arms and legs since I was a child. I actually hate my legs because they are covered in scars from it

Does your psychiatrist do counseling sessions with you or just check in and prescribe medication? I know that not all of them do counseling sessions because they don't have the time. If they don't, I would look into finding a therapist in addition to your psychiatrist to work with you on a weekly basis for the compulsive behavior. It is nice that you're already seeing a psychiatrist so they would be bale to refer you to someone that would be a good fit for you.

I can’t believe I’m not the only one!!! I have OCD and it often manifests as dermatillomania, specifically on my legs. It’s a huge confidence buster for me, so I completely feel you. 😔 I have been using Melarase on my scars, so hopefully they’ll fade by the wedding in June.

I used to lather myself in any kind of scar cream I could find but my scars are super dark. Luckily when I tan they get less noticeable so that's my goal for the wedding.
