Brides who postponed wedding due to coronavirus - how are you choosing new date

on March 13, 2020 at 10:38 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 6
I can’t even believe I’m asking this question, but I think I’ve reached a place where my destination wedding is cancelling itself with all of the travel restrictions, school closings, panic, etc.

I’m curious - spring brides who already made the tough decision to postpone your wedding, when are you selecting for your new date? Fall 2020, same time next year, etc.? Did your planner help you coordinate the new date with all of your vendors?
I’m confused because even if I decide to postpone how do I even know when it’s going to get better? This also seems like such a messy process coordinating a new date with all my vendors not to mention all of my guests who have already booked their travel and accommodations.
Would love to know anyone’s thoughts.

We're currently mid process, but since they're business as usual it's hard to say. Our current plan is to aim for some time in August if we do reschedule, but we need to know the money we'll be out not going through with April. I'll update you as we work through with the venue, but I would say fall is a safe bet.

Have you spoken with your vendors/venue to see what the penalties are? Double check your contract to make sure there isn't a clause for Pandemic (Wedding Insurance / travel insurance doesn't cover)

When it comes to picking a new date, how did you choose this one? I think you and your FH just need to sit down and find a new date that's special to you both.

Ok thanks! I would love to know how you’re working through with your venue. I only have a day-of coordinator, so I have to work through all of these issues with my vendors by myself.

My venue is business as usual. They provided me dates but they aren’t really viable for the rest of 2020 and I don’t think I can make it another year thinking about this wedding. I’m also worried about the fall and hurricane season in the Caribbean - I don’t need any more uncertainty.

We chose this date honestly based on our family’s availability since it’s a destination wedding but that’s a good point. Thanks!

I understand coordinating dates around family.....

I would definitely double check the cancellation clauses, start pulling up carribbean news and see what they are saying as it relates to the virus.

On a side note, I'm currently at war with a hotel because they note "acts of God" are reason to cancel without penalty. They also cited that their company was business as usual and local government had no bans.. - I cited that their local government is banning domestic travel (not at all what she said), and if they the hotel can guarantee the wellness of the 500 + guests flying to this city for the event, I'd gladly continue with our contract. (This is business function with the hotel attached to a major airport). - Sometimes you have to play hardball, even if you don't want to

Honestly, most of our vendors are small businesses. After we got our venue to move the date, we ended up calling everyone and explaining the situation. I paid one deposit with my mua, and the dj is going to be paid in full on our original date. The others were very understanding - our florist is an absolute gem to work with - and moved without question. It's a tough time with tough decisions. Of course we paid our florist already, and the cake lady was also paid in full. We basically asked them all for the same plans on different date, and they were all amiable luckily. Now to wait 5 months for the big date on the day we had originally picked out.
