Bridesmaid Dresses: Short or Long??

Eugenia, on June 28, 2013 at 8:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

My FH thinks that because my dress is long, the bridesmaids should be too. Is this right??

We're having a morning ceremony in June, so I though short dresses would be appropriate. He just doesn't want them looking sexier than me!

Please share your thoughts!

Oh they won't look better than you regardless of long or short. I'm a fan on short dresses in summer months.

And no, just because your dress is long does not mean they have to be long too. I have a long dress and my girls are wearing short dresses.

Well Its up to you, and/or your bridesmaids. Ask them? I'd do short since its summer, but some weddings I have been in we wore long dresses in the summer, bu they were also indoor wedding/reception

If you're having an outdoor wedding, I'd definitely go with short. Maybe look into tea length.

I would also go with short or cocktail/tea length in June, especially if it's an outdoor ceremony.

My girls have tea length dresses and mine is long. I'm more special that way Smiley winking

Thank you, everyone! Yes we are doing an outdoor wedding, so it made sense to me to go short!

Tea length is a good idea though. I just hope I can find them in the right color.

    thanks, all!!

I'm having an outdoor wedding and probably going long, mainly because my wedding is on the beach and I don't want a gust of wind coming and causing Marilyn moments on the beach! haha

If your FH is still thinking long would be better, just remind him that usually long dresses are for a more formal event - so if you're not having formal, short/cocktail length is more appropriate anyway! Smiley smile

"Etiquette" says the later the time, the longer the dress. I'm personally tired of etiquette and "rules" Smiley smile We're doing longer dresses for my BMs, and knee length for my Jrs. We're also have mismatched dresses, 2 guys on my side (bridesmen), and as of yesterday, 7 on his side and 6 on mine (we decided to add another groomsman yesterday). I think you should do what you want. At the end of it all, everyone will say "that is so them" and THAT is what I'm looking for Smiley smile

The general rule is that the BMs should not be more formal than the bride. So if the bride is wearing tea length, the BMs should not be in long dresses. But the other way round is fine. We both wore long dresses, and our MOH wore a knee-length dress.

That's just silly. We're having an evening, semi-formal wedding and my BMs are wearing tea-length dresses. I don't think there is any sort of requirement that says they have to be long to be dressy.

My FH just said "ok, they're pretty" when we talked about BM dresses and I showed him what I liked.... tell yours that unless he's wearing one, he should back off :p

These are my BM dresses, and I think they're plenty "semi-formal" even though they aren't long. They're satin, and a little longer than in the photo - they come to just past the girls' knees.

Woah, woah, woah. FH should think you are the sexiest thing on the planet, no matter what you wear! And what your bridesmaids wear shouldn't make a difference in that opinion. Tell him to shut that trap! Smiley winking

That being said, the only reason I picked short BM dresses is because we didn't want them dragging in the dirt at our outdoor wedding. I've never thought one length was more 'sexy' than another though, I feel the cut of the dress decides that more than the length.

    @Carol - sadly that link didn't open!

Thank you everyone for your input. I'm going with what I originally had like (knee length, chiffon dresses) and will deal with his 'tude if it comes to that :-)

This forum is by far the most helpful people on earth! Thank you!

I don’t think it matters. We’re having a September morning wedding and doing short dresses.

Our wedding is this weekend, my girls are wearing short / knee length...they picked them out and it's something they both said they can and will be able to wear again. Where a long one they probably would never wear again...
