Bridesmaid Hair/makeup

Samantha, on January 3, 2020 at 9:37 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 5
So I am trying to figure out what I want to do. So my wedding party is 7 girls and myself. My mother and the grooms mother. Some of the bridesmaids have expressed that they want to do their own hair/makeup. I am hesitant as I do not want it to be day of and stressed about them doing it themselves. The grooms mother is not sure if she wants her hair/makeup done, my mother does. If I were to allow people to do their own it would mean my 4 bridesmaids, myself and my mother. Which seems more relaxed and would be easier for the salon to do..... I don’t know if anyone had any thoughts on this?

You can’t force someone to get their hair and makeup done, even if you’re paying for it.

I have 6 bridesmaids and a flower girl. 4 bridesmaids chose to have my stylist do their hair and 4 decided to have my MUA do their makeup. 1 bridesmaid has her own stylist/MUA coming for her and her daughter (flower girl). 1 girl has a friend doing her hair/makeup. They all chose what they wanted done, if anything. I chose not to pay for it so I can’t force them to use who I chose and I’m 100% okay with that. I’m also not requiring specific looks, just whatever they’re comfortable with.

I think you are best letting everyone do what they feel most comfortable with.

Are the girls wanting to DIY because they don't want to/aren't able to pay to have a professional do it for them? If that's the case, there are definitely a wide range of options as far as you covering it for everyone (if it's in your budget), covering a portion of everyone's services, or choosing one service (ex: all get hair done by pros and DIY makeup). Think about the overall look you want for your day, and then consider:

    1. Are the girls able to achieve the desired look themselves (if you want super glam makeup and/or an intricate up-do, this may not be realistic)

    2. Will it be cohesive when all the girls are lined up and half are done professionally and half are DIY - this may not be a factor because I know there are tons of ladies out there who are makeup/hair wizards, I'm just not one of them!

We had a similar day-of: 5 BMs, myself, and 3 moms - everyone had makeup professionally done and all but two moms had their hair professionally done (one has a pixie cut and the other extremely curly hair) and it was a lot more fun to have pros taking care of us on the big day!

I've been a bridesmaid who's had it done and done it myself. First, do the girls normally do their own hair and makeup well? I know that sounds cruel but you don't want someone who has never done their make up to try and apply flawless eyeliner.

Second, is it cost-prohibitive to them? Just straight up ask. For me spending $70 on makeup was a big HECK NO when I was a bridesmaid last summer.

Third, is the hairstyle you picked easily replicated? Aka can your girls copy it easily? You don't want all but a few girls to look the same and the DIY ones looking like trash.

Lastly, do you care? For my wedding, the girls HAVE to get their hair done (see point above) but makeup? Up to them. For example, my mom has done her makeup the same for 20 years and is NOT about to let someone else touch her face. Should she wear more blush that day? Probably. Do I really care? No, not at all.

    Best of luck to you!!
