Budget dilemma. Music

I F, on March 13, 2023 at 8:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
Hey! So my mate and I are looking for a DJ and he has a cousin that does it professionally but he won't give us a family discount which sucks lol.but he did say that he charges $1200 for the whole night which is only 5 hours. I think it's a ridiculous amount especially if they are family. How much would the typical DJ for a wedding usually cost? What are the add ons that comes with it. What have you done for your wedding for music? We are on a budget but we also don't want it to be just an iPad and pressing play. Any advice? Is it bad that I'm annoyed he won't give us a better deal? Or is this a good deal?

Honestly $1200 is a really good deal. We payed $1500 for 5.5 hours just for the DJ to do music (no extra add ons) and that was almost 4 years ago. Prices have gone up significantly in the last few years. It doesn't matter if this person is family. If this is their livelihood and you're expecting them to work for you, you should be properly compensating them.

Checkout the DJ prices on weddingwire. Make sure you sort of match up what you would get with your cousin and what the listed DJ vendors have. You have one of those odd situations where you could hope for a discount. The alternative way to see this is that you would (hopefully) rather have the money go to family than to strangers -- all other aspects being equal.

DJs around me are pretty much the MC and control everything for the reception, as well as sound for ceremony. 1200 sounds like an alright deal. However, he would enjoy the evening if he wasn't working. Maybe he could give you guys a good recommendation in your price range.

$1200 for 5 hours is a steal. Check out Eventective.com and make sure you click with them. No two vendors offer the same add ons either.

The other way to look at it is I would never ask a close cousin to work at my wedding as opposed to being a guest. A discount is always nice, but you'd be expecting him to give up his regular income which is not fair either.

As far as prices go, that is entirely dependent on location, experience and reputation of the DJ. Where I live some DJs can earn as much or more than a live band.

No one is entitled to a discount. Support your friends and family who are small business owners and pay them a livable wage so they can stay in business. Think of it this way: if music is one of your top 3 priorities, then financially invest in this without regret. If it is not, then use an iPad and put your money into that which you do care. Not everything has to be top of the line, nor does everything have to be the cheapest option either.

Hi! We’re paying $1200 for our DJ/MC for 6 hours. I think you got a pretty good deal, but you could always check out your other options before you commit, in case you find a better one!

He has his own booth, lighting for booth, and is also MC’ing which we wanted. He also had additional lighting to add for a cost, so we added 8 “up lights” for $300, so paying him $1500 total.

Well, I haven't researched local-to-you DJ prices, so I have no idea if his rate is reasonable. But I do know you should set aside your annoyance that he won't give you a discount. If he were getting married, would you give him a present worth many hundreds of dollars? People are allowed to earn a living, even if they have cousins.

Just shop around for something you can afford. Sounds like you will be much better off hiring someone you aren't related to so there's no resentment anyway.

I don't know where you're located, but $1200 for a wedding DJ is an amazing deal as far as I'm concerned. In my area, the standard range is $****. I'm paying a bit more than that for a well known DJ. I don't even think I could find a good DJ for 1200 in my city, but you should look up average costs around you.
