Building a Budget-- Catering Cost Help!

Sarah, on December 1, 2019 at 6:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

I've been contacting vendors, but I'm not getting many answers because my wedding isn't until June 2021. So many of the replies I get aren't helpful, so I'm hoping one of you can jump in!

I'm really trying to get estimates for catering so I can build our budget. We're in Boise, Idaho and are anticipating 50-75 guests. We'd like light hors d'oeuvres during our cocktail hour, plus (hopefully) a seated dinner. My and fiancé and I are foodies and having a seated dinner is a high priority for us, but we're open to options depending on cost.

I have no idea how to build our budget without feedback from caterers-- I certainly don't need exact numbers, but does anyone have ballpark numbers they would be willing to share so I know how to plan? TIA!!

I paid about $135 per person for cocktail hour, 3 course meal, and dessert in Carmel, California. That price did not include alcohol. For a lower cost of living area I would think it would probably be between $75-$100 a person.

Our passed hors d’oeuvres and seated meal will be $85-100/pp depending on which entree they choose. No alcohol or dessert included. Boston area.

Ours was $120 a person for cocktail hour, 3-course plated dinner, and full open bar. I'm in central NJ.

Ours was $153/pp and included cocktail hour, a seated dinner, and an open beer and wine bar. Our wedding was in the mountains of NC.

Our catering was roughly 50/pp before alcohol!

I would email the vendors you’re interested in, tell them what you want and ask for a proposal. Then you’ll have clear answers. Some people plan very early, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be able to answer you. Find out if they’re available for your date too in your initial email.
