Burlap on the tables- is it itchy?

BlueEyesCurlyQs, on May 13, 2014 at 4:54 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

We all know how popular burlap weddings are right now. I jumped on the bandwagon, and I love them! After a couple of tablecloth posts, I have a question... have you been to a wedding that had a burlap tablecloth, runner or overlay? Was it itchy?

I'm trying to decide what I want to do. The church has white tablecloths for all of their tables that we can use (read: free), but I'm afraid it will be too bright of a contrast. We could always order ivory/cream with a burlap runner and maybe eggplant napkins. What do you think?

Our colors are Aubergine, Cream, and Burlap with accents of pumpkins (centerpieces). Really trying to go for the warm, fall, earthy look.

I am doing a runner just to add a bit of color too. Actually we are doing similar but I'm using green and orange.

We had burlap runners on our tables, and it wasn't itchy at all. I had the same worry. We used ivory table cloths, and our colors were Pool Blue and Cocoa.

Yes, it is quite itchy and rough. It also smells. You might want to consider washing everything before use, so it won't be quite so bad.

I was at a BBQ a few weekends ago and the host made her own DIY place mats from burlap. She used GARDEN GRADE from the home improvement store and that WAS itchy and it had a smell to it - like a cross between barn and birdseed. I would pay a few cents extra to get the better stuff from the fabric store because it does not smell nearly as strong and it is softer Smiley laugh

I would test out a few different types if I were you. Some burlap can be really itchy and extremely smelly...

Also some of it can shed little burlapy fibers that might be noticeable if you were using any darker linens.

We are using burlap on our tables as table squares to ancor our centerpieces and I find it not to be itchy however our guests will not be touching it too much we are also making burlap utensil pockets so we are looking forward to that. We are using white linins. Also keep in mind their is different tones of burlap.

You can boil it if you want to soften it and reduce the amount of shedding of the fibers.

I am allergic to burlap so I am not using it but it does shed and smell. I am using a burlap looking fabric called yuma. It has the same look but with out the smell and shedding. My mom works in fabrics and hates burlap because it get everywhere when cut.

There's an Etsy designer that specifically sells non-smelly burlap. Check it out! https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/theruffleddaisy
