Bustle Help, please!

Christina, on March 26, 2019 at 10:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

I am going for my alterations appointment in two days and I am a little panicked about the bustle. I don't typically like how bustles look but with how long my train is, I have to have one or I'll be tripping/stepped on all night. My seamstress comes highly recommended and I know she will be able to show me different styles but I just wanted some opinions. What type of bustle would you put on this dress??

If it was me, I would shorten the train quite a bit. It seems excessively long, especially if you don’t like bustles (I don’t either). If the train is little shorter, with a fitted gown like yours, I would do one point under or over bustle. It’s the simplest bustle & I like the clean look of it.

I like American bustles (over bustle) personally. French bustles (under bustle) and royal bustles exist but I hate the ruffled look.

Option you may have not considered but since it looks like you have to mess with the hem anyway... Cut off the train and have no bustle. You can also shorten a train. These more expensive though because it's easier to sew a couple buttons than hours of redoing the entire hem.

I don’t want to lose the train, that’s not even an option I’ll consider. It’s gorgeous and part of the reason I fell in love with the dress. I know I need to bustle it, just looking for opinions on which bustle will look good with the style of dress.

Do you like ruffles / or a more of a flat look / or looking for the not a bustle but but bustled look?

French is more ruffled of a look

American is more of a waterfall look flat look

Ballroom makes it look like there isn't a train at all but it very difficult on any gown that isn't a ball gown or has a long train. However, it tucks the train completely under the dress and doesn't look like a bustle

Royal are kinda expensive because of all the points

There is also the bow bustle but it's a similar look to the American bustle except there is a bow.

With the cathedral train, your cheapest / easiest option would be American. But if you really hate the bustle look then consider a ballroom bustle

I don’t have an answer for you (I know nothing about bustles and I’m not getting mine bustled even though it does need it (but not as bad as yours lol)) but I love your dress! I’m pretty sure I’d just wanna stand there the whole time just like that so everyone could look at it, haha.

Your seamstress should be able to show you some options to pick from for bustles. And I'm sure she'll be able to advise you on what will work best for your dress that will still be something you like!

I agree with a PP - if you don't like the look of bustles what about a wrist loop to hold up the train?

Have you had her pin it up in to all your options to see what you like best? Maybe a wrist band instead?

Your dress is beautiful! I like the idea of the wrist loop. I have an under bustle, I think it’s called. I don’t love it but I needed it. I’m going to try my best to hold off on bustling it as long as possible. My seamstress did do a good job and the lace pattern flows with it bustled up so it looks like it was made that way. Maybe yours could do something like that. Definitely don’t shorten the train. Long trains are beautiful! Have her pin it a couple ways so you can see what you like best.

For that much train on that narrow a dress, you'd probably need a multi point bustle to get it off the floor enough. The wrist loop is probably your best bet. You might also consider having a reception dress with no train to change into after dinner/ cake cutting/ first dance.

Met with my seamstress today and she was amazing at showing me all of my options. Ended up going with the a 17 point French bustle and I love it. My poor bridal party.. lol

Can't wait to see it all finished!

Thank you for this comment! I love the train on my dress and couldn't imagine getting rid of it. I posted a picture above this comment of what I went with. My seamstress called it a French bustle.

It looks perfect! She did a really good job at making it look like it belongs with the dress. It doesn’t take away from the fitted look of the dress either. And I love that you can see the beautiful buttons going all the way down. I’m jealous! You look great!

I would work with your seemstress. I was worried going into my appointment today too because of the bustle. She just grabbed it and started pinning and I was thrilled with how it turned out. Im sure my style wont work for your dress but my point is they know what will and how to make it look beautiful! Don't stress let them work their magic! Here's my before and after from today!

I LOVE your train. When I found my dress the one thing I knew I wanted was a long train, I saw your update and I think it looks gorgeous! My first fitting is Friday and I was wondering this same thing so thank you for making this post!
