Bustle your own gown?

Ali, on June 6, 2011 at 7:30 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 22

I'm cringing at the thought, but I'm thinking of bustling my own gown, it's an Alfred Angelo 1516 and I'm looking at doing a three point over bustle. Has anyone done their own bustling? And how do you think the bustle would look with this gown? Sorry I don't have a picture on this computer.

Go to a seamstress. That's not something people generally "DO" for themselves. You would need to pin it with the dress on yourself, which would be impossible. It's not an expensive thing to have done.

It's not the expense, it's that there isn't anyone even close the my area that does it. I'm tempted to have it on and have my MOH pin it. I am by no means a seamstress, but from what I've read they are simple to do.. I know, those are famous last words.

No, they are not "simple to do". You need to have it professionally done or you run the risk of the pins tearing the fabric of the dress or you tripping over it. Alfred Angelo will be able to do it with the rest of your alterations, unless of course, your dress fits absolutely perfectly as is...

I have no idea how the whole bustling works at my dress place they said i only need a loop at the bottom cause i already have buttons down the back and that it was a really simple thing because i was considering taking the train all the way off but the train is so pretty i couldnt do it so bustling i will go well not me but my neighbor is going to

I'm not having my dress altered outside of possibly the bustle. I don't have an Alfred Angelo anywhere near me, I went out on a limb and ordered it online and had it shipped to me. My dress has buttons down the train and back too. All it would be is either loops or maybe hook and eye closures. I'm not going to just start doing it lol, but I'm going to look into it further, people sew their own dresses, so it's possible lol

Soooo....you've never tried it on, but you know it won't need any alterations to fit you? You'd be the first. Ever.

Unless you are a seamstress, this is highly ill advised.

I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear, I have it and I've tried in on quite a few times. Like I said, I wouldn't call myself a seamstress, but I have sewing experience. Thank you for your opinion, I understand what you mean, it's a risky thing.

Well it all depends on which look you want. I just googled the bustle for this particular dress and saw 3 different looks. I have been sewing since I was 13 and personally I would only tackle 2 of these 3.

Here is the 3rd way and personally I like this one better but this is one that I would NOT tackle. Good luck in what you decide.

Thank you, chuwana. Like I said, I'm in no hurry and I'll look into a few different things. I has just asking if anyone else had bustled their own or if anyone had seen that dress bustled.

Thank you Kimm those were only images I could find either. I'm thinking I'll follow the style of the black one but have other points on the sides so it would be kindof in inverted V instead of being squared off. But I do love the pink one, it isn't my style.

Well if you're going to for more of the looks of the black one but make it more your own style, then I don't think you really should have too much of problem. If you or someone you know has done plenty of sewing and know that it's going take a bit of doing because the dress and it's layers are going to be a bit on the heavy side and you don't want it to rip the dress, then I think you should be ok. I would practice with something first of equal weight and see what you get.

I have the same dress and I was lucky enough that I only have to have the bustle done. It was only $120 to have the cascade bustle put in at the Alfred Angelo store I'm sure there has to be someone near you who has some experience with bustling, it would be a shame to damage your dress and ndot be able to fix it.

I have never done a bustle but have considered it. Best thing to do is practice on something that is the same material as your dress. Atleast you will know your limitations. Also make it a simple bustle or something that you feel you can do.
