byob wording on invitation

Adrienne, on November 24, 2019 at 9:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17
I think we are going to provide a limited amount of beer and wine at the reception, but allow guests to bring whatever else they would like to drink. I already confirmed this is OK with the venue.

What’s the best way to word this on the invite to keep it classy?

Don't put it on the invitation. But if you are doing a website, or a fact sheet to send about hotels, meals, whatever, just say, "The venue license allows guests to bring additional liquor for themselves. We will be providing beer and wine only." Since in most places it is illegal without the correct license, many people are hesitent for good reason.

If you must, I’d suggest putting it on the website and not the invitation.

I had an FAQ page on the website and it basically said alcohol will be provided but feel free to bring your own if you wish!

The reason being is that I only had wine and cognac so that definitely wasn't for everyone aha.

You could mention it on your Web-Site and have someone that you trust spread the word for those that are not Internet Saavy.

    However, please review this link.

I would highly recommend against this, for etiquette and legal liability sake. Hosting beer and wine is a totally fine option--I'd look into how much it would be to upgrade your package to include hosted beer and wine throughout the reception. It's a lot cheaper than doing a full bar.

    Standards differ.

I've been to dozens of weddings and never been asked to pay for or bring anything. And we didn't ask our guests to pay for or bring anything. We gave the wedding we could afford.

Disagreeing is not rude. It's not trolling, either.

If your venue allows it, (I would get that in writing just in case), then I would put it on your wedding website! On your invites put something like "For additional information: {wedding website URL}" there you can put an FAQ with that information on there! Smiley smile

If you come up with any awesome wording, please share!! Or maybe I am overthinking it and should just say "Limited beer and wine will be provided. Please feel free to bring your own alcohol of choice."

Good suggestion, but I have a lot of guests I know for a fact will not visit the website. I am considering an FAQ card with the invitation packet so they have it in print, but it's not part of the actual invite.

Just a thought... I created a Facebook page after I sent my save the dates so that people could see who else was going and so that I could post updates on things. My wedding is a destination wedding but I think that having a Facebook page gives people the opportunity to read more about your event and they feel a little more comfortable asking questions about it... Doing this made me way more comfortable with how I worded things and kind of turned it in to a little joke.
