Cake Centerpieces?

ADamN, on May 29, 2009 at 12:36 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 21

Hi! I am a newbie and just getting started on our plans. I was trying to think of something different for centerpieces and came across an idea of using "mini" cakes, decorated with fresh flowers, as the centerpieces and not having a traditional wedding cake. Is anyone doing this or have they been to a wedding that did? Thoughts?

Thanks everyone!

I think thats kinda cool, but dont forget about your cake to cut into together. each mini cake could be slightly different in color to keep your theme. i like this idea

Also think about how once the cakes get cut into and eaten you won't have a centerpiece at all. So if you do the cake thing then try and have candles or flowers or something around them so that the tables aren't left with just some cake crumbs as centerpieces later in the night

Laura, I am laughing at the picture in my head of crumbs sitting in the center of the table! LOL, now that's class!

Thanks for the postive responses you guys. I am always trying to do the unpopular thing and be different for some reason but sometimes my ideas are a bit too far from the norm so I need a reality check at times!

Ha! well it's still a cute idea you just have to tweak it a bit. Like a really pretty dessert stand with candles on it and then assorted cupcakes or other sweets would be great cause when they take all the cupcakes and sweets off you'd still have a pretty stand with candles on it...I'm sure there's a way to do it that would work!

Or even petit fors on a compote with candles/flowers. I am shying away from a tradtional large wedding cake so I am trying to be creative, which I don't do well!

I have had 3 weddings that I designed with this style of centerpiece, You may want to think of the expense to display them, this has always been the biggest bug in the plans for my clients, By the time they get a tall enough and stable enough cake stand for every table they could have had a traditional centerpiece with all the bells and whistles.

and as some have said, before the party is over, you have an empty plate with scatterd floral toppers and crumbs! Its a mess LOL

You might do a Cupcake wedding cake , rent a 5 or six tier cake stand and stack pretty flower topped cupcakes on this. You can have a traditional top layer with topper to cut and your wait staff can distribute the cupcakes to each guest on pretty clear glass plates for elegance.

This has been popular here in So.CA, and it doesnt cost nearly as much as the tiny cake displays. Feel free to go to my website and ask me to send a picture or two of this look. its very festive!

Those Mini wedding cakes can cost you a lot of money. I am a pastry chef and we can charge up to 20 per mini cake, if not more. It is more labor and time consuming. In the long run it would be cheaper to get a regular wedding cake. Or just do a cup cake wedding cake.

I really wanted to do the cake centerpiece idea but FH didn't like it. He was imagining the kids sticking their hands in it and making a mess, then the other guests at the table have no other cake to eat.

I like it though... depending on the table size/setup small kids might not be able to reach it anyway.

My friend used to work at a banquet hall and she said that they loved when weddings had a cake per table. It let them skip the whole step of serving the cake, which caused problems because before you get the last people even served the first people have already finished. Plus you get to skip the fee halls usually charge for "cake cutting and serving" and she said the guests had a lot of fun cutting their own cakes.

It does look beautiful - but a cake big enough to decorate with flowers is a bit too big for 8 guests. I had a client do this - goregeous, but there were about 10 cakes left over! (My kids were pleased to have a pretty cake come home with me!) I'd suggest half cakes, half something else.

The service items - plates, cake knife & server - came to tables after the bride & groom cut theirs. Me and my two assistants facilitated the serving. I also had purchased carryout containers for guests to take some home.

I've decided to do the centerpiece cakes INSTEAD of a traditional wedding cake. The bakery I am using does them regularly and displays them on top of champagne glasses.

They are going to be a one tiered, 8-10" round cake, minimally decorated and topped with a few fresh flowers, which are included in the price. They will cost around $20 as a pp poster stated but I am only having around 125 guests so I believe in the end, it will cost just as much as having a regular cake and then having to buy/rent additional centerpieces on top of that. I'll have them throw a few flower petals in the champagne glasses so that once the cake plate has been cleared, there won't be a mess left. Also, I was thinking, once the meal has been served and people get up and start dancing and mingling, nobody pays attention to the table anymore. It's really about the first impression and the beauty of the room when you walk in.

I put one on an inspiration board so that you guys can get an idea of what I have in mind.

My friend went to a wedding where they did this and she said it turned out nicely.

Oh, and we are having an adult reception so the kid fingers won't be an issue, haha!

FI was happy with it as long as we get our own cake, to eat, he doesn't care about the cutting ceremony and I am not really into it either.

    Thanks again everyone!

I am thinking about doing centerpiece cakes also, but am worried about the cost. I don't know if it would end up being cheaper or not.

I have time to think about it and decide. Our wedding isn't until June 2012, but as of right now we are inviting about 225 people. I would need like 20 cakes and places I have checked so far start at 22-30/cake...minus fillings.

I don't feel creative enough to do a flower centerpiece so thought this would be an easy out...

I am doing the same. I am making the cakes myself. I will make them a few weeks before and then freeze the cakes. The week of, I will defrost and put on the icing.

I will be ordering my cakes at a Chinese Bakery in San Diego for my wedding, $7 for 6 inch cake with white frosting and strawberry/coconut/pineapple filling. The cakes are fresh and taste delicious. Do you know where I can get the Single Cake Stand for the cakes? Thanks!

Me and my fiance have been planning on doing this, we have a vine theme with light blue and green as the colors which will alternate on each cake. We're finding pedestal bowls to place the cakes on (upside down) and placing LED candle motives inside the bowl, then wrapping vinery around the base.

For cake topper centerpieces, I'd love to go with something that I can have as a keepsake. Something my grandchildren will see at our house. A unique cake topper with our faces and wedding attires.
