Cake Cutting Knives??

JennV, on April 14, 2016 at 2:34 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 28

So... are cake cutting knives really a thing? Doesn't a venue have knives to cut cakes? Someone please explain the reasoning behind it, unless its just a 'keep-sake'

I believe it's just a keepsake.... we used a kitchen knife... pretty sure the handle was bright orange.

It's a prop but one we chose...

eta Since then it has been passed around as a "Something Borrowed" in a few weddings.

    Keepsake/photo prop. Not needed.

Keepsake often with engraving. We chose just to use the vendors knife. One less then to purchase, remember to bring and store in the house never to use it again!

Yes, the kitchen should have knives to cut your cake with. Special cake cutting knives are just if you want to keep the knife as a memento.

Ask to borrow relatives' cake knife and server -- add a traditional heirloom to your ceremony.

We used my great-grandmother's carving knife.

The kitchen should have knives to cut the cake, but double check. We didn't get a special set, seemed silly to us to spend the money.

Keepsake. Although, we did get a set since our venue didnt have a kitchen, so we had to purchase something. I found a great set by Martha Stewart at Macys for cheap. They have plain white, textured handles, so they will be used again. I actually saw them on sale for $13 the other day!

It's really just a keepsake and another thing the wedding industry can sell.

If it helps, I bought mine for $6 off amazon. It's not for a keepsake, it's literally because our reception is at a restaurant and I don't want to have to ask them for a server/cutter the day of--we'll just have it sitting there ready to go for the moment I feel like diving into the cake. Which knowing me will be the second I walk in the door. Ooh cake, who needs dinner!

It's a keepsake that you will probably never use again. It will sit on a shelf as a souvenir from our wedding

FH parents bought us a nice set... I wouldn't have purchased a set otherwise. Kinda seems unnecessary

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks its unnecessary - thanks everyone! I don't need another thing in my kitchen or basement collecting dust :-)

I bought mine off amazon as well. Got a heck of a deal and picked one up for $4.

FYI: This is all you will see of the set in photos.. Don't spend a ton on it unless you intend to keep it out on display somewhere.

Keepsake! My parents used theirs to cut cake on their anniversaries and any other celebration that called for cake. We plan to do the same Smiley smile

We bought a stainless steel set from Oneida. It matches our silverware. We will be using it anytime we have cake.

I disagree with the majority. While yes it is a keepsake it can be used over & over again. I bought a nice set because I just loved it but I will also used it for birthdays, anniversaries etc. They can be very inexpensive or very expensive depending on what you may want. As a matter of fact I saw some that were plastic at the Dollar Store the other day!

If you want it then do it if not...it's not really necessary. But you'll be wishing you had them when you're cutting birthday cake for the kiddo's later on!!! Smiley smile

I ordered ours from Target.com. I think I paid $12.99. But if you don't care about having it to keep, it's a great item to just borrow from a friend or see if the venue has one available that you can use for free.

I originally planned to use my parent's cake knife & server from their wedding instead of buying my own.

However, I received a set as a gift at my shower - toasting flutes, cake knife & server, and an ornament. They can be engraved, but we did not receive them with an engraving. A certificate was provided for us to have them engraved if we want to do that. I attached a stock photo of the set.

We will use these for more than our wedding day.
