Cake delivery cost

Adriana, on October 8, 2020 at 8:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 20
What is a reasonable charge for cake delivery? I contacted one bakery I was pretty interested in and they said it would be $60 even though my venue is only 30 min away. I would be paying about the same price for delivery as I would for my cake since we’re only having 20 guests lol. Is that price pretty standard?

Our delivery fee was included in the cost of our cake so I'm not sure how much it cost, but I do believe it is standard for them to charge a fee as they are taking the time to drive to and from your venue.

I definitely expect a delivery fee, I just didn’t think it would be that much. I was expecting $20-$30 at most

I think my venues about 30 to 40 minutes away and I'm getting charged $60 so I think that is pretty normal. Also we decide to get a two tier cake even though we're having a very small ceremony so before we got the premium flavors are ritual quote the delivery fee would have been almost to cost at the cake but that's something to consider too is the cake very affordable? I would maybe consider a bakery that is a little closer to the venue but even some that are kind of nearby May charge like a $25 delivery fee so I think the delivery fees can be a little pricey or it is factored into the cake which could be a little pricey

It sounds like they might charge per minute and since it would an hour for them to travel both ways that's why it is $60. My bakery also set up our cake and added the fake flowers our florist provided for the cake since I didn't like how the icing flowers looked.

I manage a bakery that makes and delivers wedding cakes. While it may just be 30 minutes from your venue, that is over an hour round-trip delivery for the person delivering from the bakery. They need the time to get there, set it up, and get back to the bakery. And then there is the gas, any possible tolls, etc... And keeping the cake safe during delivery. Unfortunately no matter the size, the delivery fee does add up.

I live in the Cincinnati area and some of the bakeries we spoke with had delivery fees around $100.

That $60 will get your cake safely to the venue (likely in a refrigerated vehicle) by professionals who know what they're doing. The fee covers their time and the expense of the journey as well.

Very reasonable if you ask me. We're paying $55 for our cake to be delivered to a venue 20 minutes away. I bake cakes regularly (not for my wedding though) and it's only after people drive cakes around themselves since 'it'll be easy' and have them smashed in at the side that they realise why these fees are charged.

You're paying for an additional service.

Our first baker was going to charge $65 for delivery to our venue which was 15 mins away. Unfortunately, we have had to find a new bakery to make our cake (covid stuff), and they are charging us $107.50 to deliver (venue is 30 mins away).

I'm in the Cleveland area and our delivery fee is $85. (I think it's $50 if your venue is like two seconds down the road, but anything else and it jumps up to that cost. Seems high to me, but we really wanted a cake from this bakery.)

That fee sounds very reasonable to me. Our bakery was located only one mile away from our venue and our delivery fee was higher than yours! It’s not about the distance but about transporting the cake safely at a certain temperature

Is it possible for someone to pick it up if you don't want to pay that fee?

I’m being quoted $300 for delivery, which is more than the cake costs. Venue about 1.5 hours away in the mountains (bakery in Denver). I plan to order 3 tiers to serve 75 guests. (10”, 8” and 6” tiers).

To me that still seems steep, anyone have experience with picking up the cake yourself?

For a 1 1/2 hr delivery that sounds reasonable. If it's tiered the baker needs to assemble it because that is not a skill they can teach you in 5 minutes.

Is assembly separate from set up? Their price list said “set up not included.”

Clarify that with the baker. But I would not feel comfortable transporting my own cake and prefer to pay the professional.

I’m paying $60 for 20 min away. Honestly from what I’ve read its worth it.

If you pick up the cake yourself there is risk in transporting, setup, etc that you might bump or mess up the cakes. By paying for the professional to deliver it, it’s on them to get it there safely and fix anything that might have been messed up during the drive. They also have a setup in the van that makes it so the cake doesn’t move around like it would in your car

You have to think of it this way the baker is taking the time out of their day losing work hours, fuel costs, wear and tear on the vehicle insurance securing the cake making sure it doesn't get too hot doesn't get too cold the stability of the cake carrying the cake into the venue setting the cake up and they may need to bring another employee with them that they have to pay for their time as well. I mean if you want to find someone completely inexperienced to do that and risk having your cake destroyed in the meantime by all means find somebody else but for me paying $700 for the security and peace of mind of my wedding cake is 100% worth it for delivery, some high-end bakeries charge up to $1,200 for delivery so I think you're getting a pretty good deal.
