Cake Flavor / Fillings

Lauren, on July 23, 2020 at 6:47 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 21

Y’all I am struggling with this, We are getting a 5-tier semi naked cake with fresh berries and fresh flowers with greenery, I do know that we don’t want it to be a dark color. The hard part is choosing the cake flavor/ filling combos. I can choose a different flavor for each tier or do the entire thing one flavor. But I Can’t Decide !!! It’s a spring wedding so I’m thinking “light & fresh.“ Something like berries, fruit filling, cream, etc. We are not using fondant ... because, gross . So, I know it'll be buttercream. But again, there are different flavors of buttercream that can be chosen .. I’m leaning towards almond cake w/ strawberry fruit filling & a white amaretto cake with another fruit filling .. I just really want my cake to be a WOW factor! HELP!! What flavor combo would you pick? Any suggestions? What would make you happy as a guest? Literally any input can help me at this point, lol. TIA

That sounds so good! Maybe if you can’t decide on one specific berry, you can do mixed berry

You can go with any flavor combo. Not everyone is a fan of almond/amaretto and others may be allergic. A simple vanilla cake with jam or mousse filling would be a crowd pleaser. Even a pink strawberry cake with a cream cheese or cheesecake mousse filling.

My brother did two different flavors on their semi naked cake. They used a moist vanilla cake throughout the whole thing, because so many people have nut allergies (so no almond or amaretto), then on 2 of the tiers they did Lemon, and on the other 2 they did raspberry filling and white chocolate buttercream. Both were so light and refreshing. Best cake I’ve ever had in my life!

Did you do a tasting with your baker? Sometimes they have unique flavors or some that are better than others. We tried a pink champagne cake with raspberry filling and it was great. I would also do chocolate on one tier, some people are just chocolate dessert kind of people.

This one is difficult to answer without knowing what flavours are available for you to choose from that the baker has given you to select.
We had the same issue ourselves and ultimately decided to cover our cake up. I wanted exactly that - a naked or semi naked cake with florals dripping down the sides but we chose orange poppyseed, and chocolate hazelnut as our flavours. We tried to match colours of the cakes so we could have a naked finish but the flavours we chose were the standouts and what we decided were the crowd favourites and I wasn’t willing to compromise on flavour for the sake of a naked cake.
We will have our cake finished similar to this photo but with 3 tiers and florals to match the wedding. On the upside, it means we don’t need to worry about cakes drying out as naked cakes tend to. Cake Flavor / Fillings 1

We have not, what does the Pink Champagne taste like ? Unfortunately I’m not a big Chocolate Cake Fan so it’ll have to be another flavor

From the list, how about lemon or funfetti with cream cheese filling? Most brides say they only get to eat the one slice during the cake cutting.

Have you tried the cake flavours?

also, I would steer clear of Almond in case anyone has nut allergies. You can't cater to everyone but nut allergies are a huge one that is quite common.

We wanted light flavors for ours too even though it’s a fall wedding. We’re going with lemon cake with lemon curd and a vanilla cake with vanilla custard and fresh strawberries.
I personally love almond cake however I wasn’t sure if any of our guests have a nut allergy..

I’d probably keep it to 3 combos (the top two tiers will likely be smaller so make those 1 combo). For summer I’d do one fruit (strawberry or lemon cake), one plain for allergies (white or vanilla cake), then something for chocolate lovers like chocolate or marble swirl or red velvet. Ask the bakery for good filling options.

I would go for a tasting and ask your baker for recommendations. Don't be afraid to try something out of the norm.

Our baker gave us her top most popular choices : key lime cake and key lime buttercream,

red velvet with cream cheese, chocolate cake with dulce de leche, vanilla cake with fresh raspberry , coconut lime cake with passion fruit

This is what we ended up trying:

    1. Key lime with KL2. Red Velvet with CC3. Chocolate wit Dulce4. Vanilla with Raspberry 4. Lemon with Fresh Raspberries 5. Strawberry with ?? Passion fruit?

Note we were really questioning the strawberry with passion fruit and it ended up being our favorite at the tasting. It was light, refreshing and oh so delicious.

Our cake will be the Strawberry / Passion Fruit and we'll have it in cupcakes along with Key Lime / KL cupcakes.

I second this...go for a tasting. We thought we knew what we wanted going into our tasting but completely changed our minds once we tasted certain cakes with different icing flavors.

We're doing a naked cake as well and chose to have a frosting bar. Our cake is white chocolate with cream cheese butter cream and then we'll have one ounce shot glasses of irish cream, peanut butter chocolate ganache, blackberry jam, and cream cheese butter cream. We're not huge frosting fans but we know that for some people that makes the cake and this allowed us to have more options for our guests.

I feel like you could go with any of the light colored cakes like Vanilla, Lemon, and Almond and then pair them with a fruity filling! Which sounds super yummy! 🍰
