Cake pops instead of cake

TIFFANY, on December 11, 2016 at 10:54 AM

So we decided to do cake pops and only have a cake to cut for our parents to watch. I am trying to figure out a way to have the cake pops look cute on the cake table. Has anyone else done this and do you have a picture of how it was displayed

@ciera not for over 200 people everyone was giving me prices over $1000 for cake and i didnt want that and i hate the look of big cakes for no reason i even considered getting a fake cake just for the look but our parents said they want us to do the whole cutting of the cake thing

My friend is a baker, I just asked her....she says pops are more expensive and you're better off getting a cake big enough for everyone. Not sure how you can assume how many of your guests won't want cake. Not the best hosting IMO, but it seems you don't like getting other opinions because it's your wedding. Hmmm..

I'm doing a dessert bar and I purchased these pieces to have varying heights on my table and still have a uniform look. I got great deals from Saveoncrafts.com. Maybe they would have a display option you might be interested in.

5 bucks for cake is very reasonable; enough cake pops for everyone to have more than one will cost more than that. And unless you know that every single person on your list hates cake, two cake pops won't be enough to cover the people who want four. And if you run out of dessert?

    It's mutiny.

Why is it that it seems like people who are 'on a budget' (as if other people weren't.....) never think to cut the guest list?

I was thinking what Celia says about the show of the guest list and skimping on hosting. Much like getting a large home and not being able to furnish it. Shrugs shoulders.

@jay Farrell photography how are be skimping on hosting when we know our family and friends they drink we have to provide the alcohol for our venue so instead of wasting in cake we are putting it there. We put it in the dj because our families like to party we took in consideration what we like and what our families like period. We are working with a budget of only 10000 so we cut where it didn't matter. Also I am open to opinions if you read the comments people clearly said I should increase the amount of cake pops and I said I would definitely look into that. Don't get offended just because I see something one way and you see it another. And @ceila Milton we are not even spending that on cake pops thank you

I would be upset if I went to a wedding and didn't have dessert. Honestly I've never been to a wedding without cake, cupcakes, or some sort of dessert.

Since you obviously are going to do your own thing and not take our advice on proper hosting....

I wouldn't display them on a dessert table. I would put them on the tables, one per seat. One, it will prevent people from taking multiples and you running out. Two, surely your guest can't forget dessert if it's staring them in the face.

You didn't cut where it matters....you didn't cut your guest list and that's the fastest way to be in budget.

My sister had stick less cake pops and they were DELICIOUS. She also had an ice cream bar. It seems like more and more couples are opting for non traditional desserts. I would definitely have more than one per person though. I personally would not be offended if the couple had a cake to cut for pictures but didn't actually serve it.

If you are really open to options, I can think of two easy ways out of the dilemma.

    1. Forget about the cake pops and just have enough sheet cake for each guest to have one serving. Get one decorated for display and have the other ones in the back, undecorated, for cutting. You can do the cake cutting your parents want to see and your guests get dessert. Proper hosting win.

    2. Don't have a cake cutting. I know that means you have to tell your parents they don't get something they want, which always sucks, but you are hosting an extraordinary number of people for your budget and something has to give. By not dangling the prospect of cake in front of your guests when there isn't enough for everyone, you avoid being rude by having a tiered reception. the way you have it now I guarantee you a lot of guests will be waiting for cake because they saw you cutting one. I think one cake pop person is a favor, not a dessert, so I would look into providing more cake pops.

I can't imagine that cake pops are less expensive per person than the equivalent amount of sheet cake (particularly from the local grocer and undecorated), but you may have run into the only baker who makes them inexpensively. I get that you personally prefer pops, which is fine as long as you get rid of the limited cake and provide enough pops.

Oh, so this is one of those posts. Okay. I get it.

It's an, "I only want people to affirm that my crappy idea is great, and I can treat guests like shit so I can tell anyone who says otherwise that a forum said it was okay," post. Yeah, no. We don't do that here.

If it's YOUR day, elope. Period. Otherwise, it's NOT your day. You're a host. You need to HOST your guests PROPERLY, and that means not providing some with one type of dessert, and others with another type of dessert. If you're seriously having trouble affording CAKE for all of your guests, guess what? That means you need to cut your guest list. A lot.

You could do cupcakes, and cut a damn cupcake, if you don't like the look of a big cake. Do cake pops and have sheet cake sliced up for guests. But to tier it like you're planning? That's called treating your nearest and dearest like shit, and is extremely rude.

So you can thank me or not, this is valid and extremely good advice. Go ahead and take the advice of those who posted that rudeness is a great idea, because at least then you're just WILLINGLY being rude to your guests, and believe me, they'll all be able to tell, and they'll ALL be whispering behind your back about the poor hosting.

You can use those foam bricks that people use for flowers to stand them up. Cover them with Material or something.

We gave this to my baker. She is sticking the sticks into the cake forms and then we have the small 6" cake for us to cut on the top.

Please have a cake. This is your wedding. Maybe cake pops could be a gift to take away from the wedding afterwards.

Two of the last three weddings I've gone to had a small cake for cutting and then different desserts for the guests. Both times my FH got excited, "yay cake!" and then was disappointed with the other dessert he was given. No, he didn't sulk for three weeks, but he was disappointed.

Don't cut a cake and then not offer it to your guests. It's just not nice.

Also, if your baker is good at her job...people are going to want multiple pops. I've only seen desserts go to waste when they're bad desserts.
