Cake pricing?

Maggie N, on January 26, 2013 at 3:32 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 27

How much are y'all paying per slice for your wedding cake? I keep seeing bakeries saying around $3/person. That sounds REALLY high- or is it typical?

Cake pricing depends on how may tiers...and how fancy...here in mid mo...its 1.95 per slice of the wedding cake and about .50 cents a piece for a serving of sheet cake..definitely shop around...

3.00 per person is a flat out bargain. In my area, a full, birthday style sheet cake runs 120 (serves 80) but it's not a wedding cake. Wedding cakes, decorated as such run 4.00 pp from a bakery and 12-15 from an artisanal baker.

From what I've seen, I actually think $3pp is a really good price. We found a person who is fairly new in the industry and that is about what we are paying. When we contacted more experienced bakers, their prices started at $6 or $6.50/pp. For 100+ guests, that is at least $600! It is crazy!

There is a place here you can get plain pound cake for 3.00 a slice. My cake is currently at 6.00 a person but I expect that to go up since it will be covered with sugar flowers.

That really is a bargain. I don't know any bakeries or restaurants around where I could get a plain, regular cake for $3 per slice.

My bridal cake ended up being about $1.25/slice (large slices) and the grooms cake is about $1.00 per slice.

I guess it depends on where you are, right? A wedding cake out here in the country is going to cost less than a wedding cake purchased from a "high-end" bakery in the city (at least in SWPA this is the case...people in Pittsburgh charge at least twice as much for everything as you would pay for the same thing in a small town).

If I found a bakery around my area (NYC) that charged $3 per slice, I'd wonder what was wrong with the cake. I haven't found a baker that's cheaper than $10 per slice.

Ours is very basic, and it is $4.50 per person. If we would have gotten fondant, it would be an extra $1.25 per person.

Our cake is 12.50/pp and we have no choice in vendor so...yeah. About $800 in the end.

My fiance and I are on a really tight budget for our wedding, so we ordered our cake from Walmart's bakery. I ordered a 3 Tier cake that feeds 134 people, for $125. I am attaching a photo of the cake I ordered. Good luck!

My daughters cake was made to serve 85 (there were 134 at the reception, there were approx. 12 servings leftover.)

I paid $585 for it, so that is around $6.88 per slice.

BTW, this is buttercream, not fondant.

Have you considered looking into cupcakes? I'm paying $3.50 per cupcake in Australia, but that's cheaper than wedding cake in my area.

The thing is that once you decide you don't want a sheet cake, you start talking decor, which is incredibly time consuming, and requires someone who has really been trained to do it well. When you consider that most cakes become part of the decor for much of the celebration, paying for one that really looks great and tastes great takes on a different meaning than just buying cake for 100. An amateur cake looks like....well...an amateur cake. That might not be a priority for everyone, but to me, I'd forgo the favors before I bailed on a really great, pretty cake.

It also has to be delivered and set up, which costs too.
