Cake Size

Amanda, on August 27, 2019 at 4:18 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
So firstly, I'm completely lost on the direction for style on my cake...I like too many different styles. So this is my biggest problem. But the main reason I came here was for size suggestions.

We are planning on 100 guests. So I was thinking a 4 teirs with the top teir being small like 2-4" so we can freeze it for our first anniversary. And the other teirs being 6", 8", and 10" respectively.
THEN I got to thinking, what about grooms cake and cute wedding cookies!? So I started to get overwhelmed and am looking for advice.
Should I do a smaller cake to make room for grooms cake and wedding cookies?
If my groom and I agree on the style and flavors does he need a grooms cake?
Any advice is welcome! We are about 6 months out and don't have a baker yet. I am also planning to have a candy bar during the mocktail hour for people to enjoy while we are getting wedding party pictures done.

I would start talking to bakers and get their advice on this. Grooms cakes aren't a necessity, so if you want to do one larger cake, that's perfectly okay. If nothing else, I would make the cookies your favor so you don't have to worry about factoring them into your dessert count.

Usually the groom's cake is served at the rehearsal dinner. We had 113 people, and our cake was a 3 tier cake. They just asked for the number of people and baked a cake large enough. Our bakery will also bake you a fresh version of your top tier for $28 on your anniversary. We opted to do that instead because I didn't really want to store and eat year old frozen cake.

    Caytlyn,
Makes sense. I was worried bakers wouldn't take me seriously if I didn't walk in knowing what I wanted.

Oh I like both of those suggestions! I've only ever been to a couple weddings and they both had a grooms cake at the wedding, but I like it at the rehearsal.

I'll have to ask bakers around here if they do that for the top teir!

We skipped the groom's cake entirely. Our rehearsal dinner buffet package included dessert.

Your baker should be able to tell you how much cake is needed. We’re going to do a cupcake tower, but make the top tier a small cake and the bottom tiers mixes with cupcakes, tiny key lime pies and chocolate covered strawberries. We aren’t doing a grooms cake either. Both of us feel it’s unnecessary and would much rather spend the money on other things.

I have not seen a groom's cake ever in the weddings that I have attended so I think that is not necessary. We are having about the same number of guests, and the bakery told us that we are good with a 3 tier cake. Ask your baker. They know more about this.

Once you narrow down the baker they can advise you on the amount of cake needed,I honestly think you don’t need a fourth tier. Keep in mind not everyone eats cake. A good baker will help you see what choices are out there. Looking through the photos they have of previous cakes they’ve made can be helpful. Good luck, try getting inspiration on Pinterest.

We talked to our baker, and she recommended the sizes for each tier! We're doing a 4 tiered cake for the wedding cake that feeds 152, and a 3 tiered groom's cake that feeds 52 people (we're expecting around 175-200 person people). We are also going to have chocolate covered strawberries and probably a candy table.

Talk to a baker about your options. They are going to be the expert

We skipped the grooms cake, and had a 4-tier cake. We were guessing around 130 people, and we ended up with less than 90 so we were worried we would have way too much cake left. We had 6 different flavors, so there wasn't much cake left at all. Like PPs have mentioned, the bakery you choose will be able to help you with this. Ours just wanted us to at least know what we wanted it to look like (color, frosting design, type of frosting, etc.) and how many people, and then they recommended the size.
