Cake Stands - Yay or Nay? Buy or DIY?

Sam, on April 17, 2015 at 9:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

Hi, everyone.

I am on the fence about a cake stand/platform/plateau.

I realize it makes things look very pretty, but in all honesty, is it necessary?

I originally was looking for a round, gold cake stand (our colors are black and white with a gold accents). Preferably not a footed one, since I have been told that with tiered cakes, you run the risk of it tipping over if its on a pedestal. That said, all the cake stands I can find online are upwards of $80, and I don't want to spend that much if I don't have to.

So, did you buy a cake stand? If so, where from? Or did you nix it altogether? Or, did you DIY one? If you DIY'd it, would you mind sharing a pic and/or how you made it?

Thank you in advance!

If you find one you like in silver or another color, there is always spray paint.

I saw some basic plastic clear or white ones at party city, they were like $7 and you could just spray paint it and then get a foodsafe doily thing or cut a round out of wax paper and put on top to keep the food off the paint.

I was just at Hobby Lobby today and only saw square gold ones and they were about $60. What is with the cost of these stupid cake stands?

Michael's has some plain wood ones right now ($20-ish?) that you could spray paint gold.

We rented ours from the bakery. I wouldn't trust anything I DIYed, personally, and sure didn't need to own a cake stand.

I do not see the point unless you do not have one on your registry and plan to use it at home afterwards. I never thought once about having one and didn't miss it. cake on table. done. see photo of my gorgeous cake

Same here, I'm just like you. Don't need to have one around the house afterwards. We plan on using a pre-cut big stump base for our cake pedestal. Ours fall/outdoorsy wedding theme though. I've seen nice ones at Walmart, A.C. Moore, Michaels, Hobby Lobby (if its the wrong color, can always buy spray paint and paint it to fit your color scheme).

We made ours. Here's an idea of what's it going to look like. Groom's cake will be on it's own also.

I found three candle sticks of various heights and plan to make cake stands out of them. I also bought some short candle sticks and will get some plates at the dollar store to make cookie plates of various heights.

Borrowing one from my baker. I put down a deposit and get it back when it is returned the next day.

They are pretty no matter what style. Unless you *frequently* host parties with tiered cakes, it's more economical to rent one from your baker.
