Cake Tasting! Which Flavors?

Pirate & 60s Bride, on May 29, 2018 at 3:15 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 37

Who's going cake tasting??? If you went, which flavors did you choose?

For our local reception, we thought about just ordering by phone but because we made a trip to the area we scheduled a cake tasting at our #1 vendor choice. Aw, fun & romantic "date day" too! Not our pic below but it looked something like this.

To fit our vintage theme we went for vanilla cake, two layers chocolate Bavarian creme, one layer baked apples (OMG) and fondant frosting. Lemon curd also yummy. I would have loved almond cake but DH wanted to keep it traditional.

Share your cake-tasting pics and fav flavors if you got 'em!

We are doing our cake tasting in just a couple weeks. We are having two options to taste - chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream filling and vanilla cake with raspberry jell filling!

We didnt do the traditional cake tasting because our baker is a personal friend whom we have eaten HUNDREDS of goodies from. My hardest decision was narrowing down all the flavors we had tried and loved before.

We are doing a 3 tiered cake, vanilla sour cream pound cake and chocolate sour cream pound cake. Think your traditional vanilla and chocolate but a lot thicker and moister (I know people hate that word but its so true).

Each tier will have a layer of each flavor. The outside will be covered in white chocolate buttercream and the inside (between the layers of cake) will be hot chocolate buttercream.

That way each piece of cake will have all of the flavors in them!

The outside is pretty simple, just the icing and some greenery around each tier. The baker we went with has made all of FH family cakes for literally decades, including all wedding cakes, birthday, etc. so we are so thrilled she's making ours too. Nothing tastes like her cake!

We just had ours last week! We went with a 3 tier cake alternating flavors. We picked red velvet with cream cheese filling and buttercream frosting and vanilla cake with raspberry mouse filling and vanilla buttercream. Even talking about it makes me hungry!

When we had ours we picked 2 flavor pairings: we picked yellow cake with raspberry filling and vanilla butter cream and pure white cake with strawberry filling and almond buttercream. We went with the white/strawberry/almond butter cream. So happy we did the tasting! also our tasting wasn’t free, it was 20 dollars but we came home with 2 9 inch cakes so it was worth it! Can’t wait to see our cake in december!! We did 4 teirs with alternating lace piping design and dots on every other teir. Also white buttercream flowers climbing the layers. We’re using a beautiful silver cake stand from the venue.

Our most exciting part of the cake- we’re putting Mario and princess peach (in wedding clothes) on top! May sound silly but we won best costume for a couple costume at a Halloween party 4 years ago. Only our friends will know and laugh at it tho bc I was dressed as Mario and he was dressed as the princess. So funny looking back at those pictures

I loved going cake tasting. We went to a few of them. The bakery I was dead set on ended up being such a big machine run company and had zero fun interaction. I hated that and was not what I wanted. We did a few more and they were all so much more fun! The last lady even baked us a mini 6 inch cake in the flavors we thought we wanted! I would love to do it all again. We are having chocolate cake, choco buttercream, strawberry swirl cake, strawberry buttercream, vanilla cake, and the whole thing coated in vanilla buttercream.

No pics but, we are using Nothing Bundt Cakes for our wedding. We are doing an 8 inch cake for cutting and then bundtlets in a variety of flavors for the guests. We haven't decided on the cutting cake flavor yet but, for the rest we've chosen chocolate chocolate chip, lemon, pecan praline, and white chocolate raspberry.

We tried about 15 different flavors but ultimately decided on red velvet with a light buttercream icing.

Our cake was included with our venue, so we had somewhat limited options. We're getting the largest and top layer as a raspberry/vanilla swirl, next largest layer as vanilla with chocolate chip and the 2nd-to-top layer in plain vanilla. It will have buttercream icing.

The only other flavor offered was a chocolate/vanilla swirl, but I really wanted the raspberry and the chocolate chip was better. My mom was the one who wanted a plain layer. I'm most excited about the icing rosettes. It will look somewhat like this, but with a simple dot design instead of the quilt design, and without the live flowers.

We have our cake testing next Thursday and I CANNOT wait! For our wedding, we are doing cupcakes for guests and a small one tier cake for us to cut. The flavors we chose to taste include: chocolate, s'mores, funfetti, carrot, and cookies n' cream. For the frosting options, we are trying: chocolate, toasted marshmellow, strawberry créme and vanilla! I will have to write when we decide on which flavors we like best with pictures from our tasting!Smiley smile

I don't have a pic from my tasting, it was in January and I didn't keep it lol
But we chose 2 flavors for our 2 tiered cake!
Top will be: a classic white cake with real strawberry compote filling
2nd layer is most decadent: almond flavor cake (no actual nuts), with a light amaretro soak and cannolis filling. The filling is ricotta, choc chips, rum, sugar and sooooo yummy!

There will be no fondant or buttercream icing on the cake, instead it is all going to be iced in a white whipped icing - much lighter and makes the strawberry/white cake almost strawberry shortcake lilr, perfect for summer...and on the 2nd flavor it just allows the other flavors to shine Smiley smile

FH and I did an onsite cake testing with our bakery over a year ago. It was one of my favorite parts of the wedding. We ended up liking so many different kinds that we are doing a second tasting to really nail down the specific flavors we are wanting. Because of work conflicts we are having to do an at home tasting that they will be putting together for us. I will try to post a picture since it won't be until next week.

Here are some of our potential flavors we are retesting to figure out what we like best. For each tier we are able to choose up to two different cake options and a filling in between those, then it will all be covered in buttercream frosting.

    1. Peanut butter cake and chocolate cake with a fudge filling

    2. Cookies and cream cake with Oreo buttercream filling

    3. Vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream filling

    4. Chocolate cake with hazelnut buttercream filling

    5. Mint chocolate chip cake with either chocolate buttercream filling or mint buttercream filling. (Trying to go for mint chocolate chip icecream taste)

    6. and then some Amaretto cake and pink champagne cake with whatever fillings then suggest for those to have some more options without chocolate.

I am wayyy to excited for this 2nd tasting. Smiley heart We will only be doing 3 to 4 options since we are only doing a 3 tier cake with 1 or 2 sheet cakes. But all of there options are so good it's very hard to pick!

I don't have a picture when we went cake testing but they had a container that had 6 of their most popular flavor combinations. We ended up deciding on a 3-tier cake with the bottom layer being cherry chip cake with cherry mousse (this was my favorite combo), the middle layer being chocolate with chocolate mousse, and the top layer being red velvet with cream cheese. We will also be having a sheet cake in the back with yellow cake and raspberry mousse. We went with pretty "basic" flavors but we wanted to be sure we had flavors that would appeal to all guests,
