Cake Topper--making Sure to get it Back?

Cathy, on September 22, 2019 at 6:54 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

This may sound weird, and I don't know if this is even a "thing," but I wanted to ask. We had a custom cake topper made for our cake, and would like to have it returned after the cake is served. I have heard of caterers throwing away the cake toppers, especially if they are not made of hard plastic (ours is custom made with foam and sculpey clay) or of cake toppers getting lost in the shuffle.

Is there a way to tell the caterer that we would like to have the cake topper back? It is a very special one that I designed with my husband to be in mind.

I would just be upfront that you'd like the topper back since it's custom!

This is one of the reasons we went ahead and had a DOC for daughter's wedding. She had a custom cake topper that would need to be cleaned off and repacked, and then we'd need to be sure it came home with us. Those concerns, along with other similar stuff, were enough for it to be worth it to us to pay someone to be responsible for all of it. (A couple years ago, my niece never thought about it and didn't realize until she got back from her honeymoon that they didn't come home with their cake topper after the wedding. She called the venue, but by then they claimed to no nothing about it. She was really bummed.) If you have a reliable close friend, you could ask them to take responsibility for making sure it gets home for you.

Ugh this is a good thing. I was so tired by the end of my wedding I didn't have a clean up crew so that was one of the things I forgot . Luckily ours wasn't custom or expensive

This is the cake topper I had made. My fiancé absolutely loves it!

I’m writing explicit directions for the caterer to give us back the topper. Would it be weird to ask my BM or MOH to go there right after we cut the cake and “swoop” the topper?

Yes, give instructions to your caterer if you don't have a DOC. I had purchased a vintage reindeer set on Etsy so it was important to get it back. I had a sheet of instructions and notes that I gave my planner so she made sure my topper got packed up in the same box I gave it to her in. As I was packing my car the next day this was one thing I made sure to check for.

I don’t have a DOC, but I am writing explicit instructions to the caterer that I want it back-I may even get a box for it. The other option is I was going to have either my MOH or theBest Man swoop in and grab it just after the cake cutting.

Yes definitely, just go up to the main person of the group and tell them that it is not to be thrown away.
