Cake/business insurance?

Michelle, on March 21, 2016 at 7:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 43

When booking your cake bakers, did your bakers have cake/business insurance? I met with a baker today and LOVED her cakes but she works out of her home and has no insurance. So if someone were to get sick and sue (hopefully this doesn't happen), the baker and myself and my FH could be liable. Am I over thinking this or should I make sure I pick someone that is insured?

Your venue likely requires someone that is insured. We used an at home bakery but they were insured.

Look into purchasing liability insurance for your wedding. I can't remember offhand, but I think it would cover the off chance that someone gets sick and sues.

We used a home baker but our venue required her to have insurance (in case someone were to get sick or something). So ask your venue. But I would regardless make sure that your baker is insured.

Thanks! She has been doing it for 17 years and makes about 150 cakes a year, when we asked about insurance it sounded like she doesn't want to pay taxes and register herself as a business and insure the business. She has all five star ratings.. I just don't understand why she wouldn't have insurance.

I can't imagine anyone getting sick from cake-- it'd have to be raw and nasty for you to get somonella from the eggs.... but as others have said, check with your venue.

Any cream/frosting-based desserts can be the cause of food poisoning. I'd make sure my baker had insurance or I'd get wedding insurance.

First - do check with your venue to make sure that they will allow her to bake the cake. Many will not allow anyone who is not license and insured.

Second - you really want someone who is insured. Ultimately, you will be held responsible, should anything go wrong. This is why insurance is so important.

We're getting a million dollar event policy. It'll cover pretty much everything from food born illness to acts of God. It's only about $200, so well worth it.

This could be serious bad news bears. I would go with someone who has a licensed and insured business.

I have worked with bakeries/resorts and have NEVER heard of cake insurance. Its outrageous. Yes, someone can get sick from cake, but someone can get sick from any of the food you are serving that day. If you are going with a highly known bakery or someone that has been doing cakes for a long time you don't need insurance. That is just an extra cost you don't NEED to pay!

Tina- are you having your reception at a venue that provides the food or are you bringing your own in? Where did you buy that from?

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. If she does that many cakes a year I'm sure everything will be fine.

So she wants to skip insurance making you liable if your guests get injured because she wants to hide money from the IRS. Sounds fantastic.

I would recommend hiring a reputable vendor, one that is insured and has a food permit. I personally would rather support an honest business, than one that is fraudulently avoiding taxes.

I think cake insurance is a misnomer. It's more that she should be a licensed and insured business.

I never even considered this. My husband's cousin made the cake for us as a gift. Would wedding insurance you purchase not cover this? Anyway... in the rare cake that some people got sick, who would know if it was the cake or the main meal? Or one too many drinks.

I would just get the cake if you liked it and not worry, but thats me
