Cakes For Type 1 Diabetics?

My 7 yr old son, unfortunately, recently got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Does anyone have any suggestions on cakes (that taste good) or an alternative for type 2 diabetics. I don't know. Something for him to enjoy too at the wedding so he doesn't feel left out. Right now it's a little hard for me because this is all new to me plus his dad's side of the family all have Type 2, if anyone is familiar with that. My son basically has to watch his carb intake.

    Ask your baker. Almost all the bakeries around here do sugar free cakes.

    I'm also a baker and I offer many sugar free options . I'm sure any bakery would be willing to accommodate you and have a small cake in the back for him to enjoy .

    I'll give you some advice being a type 1 diabetic. I would talk to his doctor about what you should dose for the cake, and he shouldn't need to have a special cake at all. I was diagnosed 12 years ago and have been eating 'regular' cake all those years and I've never had a bad experience. Your best bet is to talk to his doctor and see what she thinks is okay for him and then talk to bakers if the doctor thinks he shouldn't have full sugared cake

    Check with a baker. There are many sugar free options. Be careful, many sugar free have twice as much salt. as regular cakes or cookies

    @Nancy-ugh, enough with the bad advice.

    OP-sugar free cakes do not have twice the salt from a bakery. They will use a sugar substitute, stevia, or Splenda being two of the more popular choices. Talk to your baker.

    Talk to the endocrinologist. Thankfully, you still have a while and restrictions will alter slightly as he gets control of his disease. My brother is type 1 and was taught how to "cheat" after 6 months of being stable.

    Yeah I've never used double salt in my sugar free cakes and I use stevia 90% of the time . Not sure where you got that from Nancy

    My son (13...almost 14) was diagnosed with type 1 7.5 years ago. It's scary, isn't it? If you have the carb to insulin ratio from his doctor, it's pretty easy (though so overwhelming at first) to figure out how much insulin to give for the cake. My son eats almost nothing different, we just have to add up the carbs to know how much insulin he needs. All that to say, he can eat the regular cake. Just find out from the baker/google the average carb count per slice for proper dosing.

    Nancy anything processed is likely going to have tons of sodium. A cake from a bakery is not the same as a sugar-free packaged product.

    @Nancy - You are talking about processed junk. We are talking about cakes from a bakery that are made with real ingredients. FFS, please stop giving bad advice.

    I'm a Type 1! Cupcakes from a box are usually between 15g and 18g. And keep in mind, when foods (especially sweets) have labels that are sugar free, it does not always mean its going to be low carb. Is he on the shots or does he have a pump? That could make a difference depending on his insulin to carb ratio. I hope this helps! Also, if you're looking for a community of type 1's and parents and family members of type 1's check out beyond type 1! They've got an app too! They're all super helpful, just like the folks here! I believe a few people have also posted recipes for low carb cakes as well!

    @JessieJV- thanks for the advice. I forgot about the sugar free substitute. Do you think they will taste just as great as a regular cake

    If they are made with Stevia, yes. Try and find a bakery that uses that.

    @GhostlySmile- wow yes it's very scary. I mean I feel so overwhelmed fersure. Being this is his first diagnoses I want to be right. I have a friend who took my grocery shopping the other day and she said he so ears regular foods as well and when it comes to special occasions she just gives more insulin to cover. Hopefully that day of my wedding I can have extra help for someone to count his carbs and give him the correct dose

    I wouldn't go for sugar free, speaking as a Type 1 who has dealt with sugar free stuff before, you're looking at carbohydrates. Sugar free does not always mean low carb. Half the time you are going to get a cake that is sugar free, but its also 45 carbs. Just as @ghostlysmile and @autumn and I said, check with dosing. Just because we have diabetes doesn't mean we can't have sugar. Its all about insulin and carb in take.

    Get the baker to give you a carb breakdown of the cake and other desserts.
