My 7 yr old son, unfortunately, recently got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Does anyone have any suggestions on cakes (that taste good) or an alternative for type 2 diabetics. I don't know. My 7 yr old son, unfortunately, recently got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Does anyone have any suggestions on cakes (that taste good) or an alternative for type 2 diabetics. I don't know. Something for him to enjoy too at the wedding so he doesn't feel left out. Right now it's a little hard for me because this is all new to me plus his dad's side of the family all have Type 2, if anyone is familiar with that. My son basically has to watch his carb intake.

Oh I understand! That was me six years ago! But you all will get through it! Its a lot of trial and error, I've found, but once you guys have a flow it will be just fine Smiley smile Since you're new to it all, I highly recommend Beyond Type 1, everyone there is so helpful and they've even got a pen pal program so your son could send and receive mail from another Type 1 if he wanted! If you have any questions feel free to contact me through here or even find me on Beyond Type 1. I would be more than will to answer any questions you might have Smiley smile

It's scary and there are some days I STILL don't feel like I know what I'm doing, be he's still alive so... I just wanted to give a heads up on something most people don't know or think of: other things can cause havoc with blood sugars. Travel (high blood sugar) and busy/exciting events (lows) are 2 that can play with my son's blood sugar, no matter how on top of it we are. Just something extra to think about while planning.

FH is type 1, and we're looking into some sugar free options. We're doing a small cake with lots of cupcakes, so not all will be sugar free. Talk to some bakers. I would think that most do sugar free. Of course, it will have a different texture and taste, but try to do some cake tastings!

I can't help with cake options, but I follow a facebook page for a seven year old with Type 1 who has a service dog which can smell highs and lows (amazing animal!) but his mom, who runs the page, often posts useful diabetic friendly recipes. Look up Saving Luke - Luke and Jedi.

My FH is type 1. He's just planning to go for the real cake and adjust his insulin dosage to cover it. A year from now, both you and your son will feel a whole lot more comfortable with carb counting and determining how much insulin he needs to cover his carbs. Given the situation, it would be very reasonable for you to ask your baker about the nutrition facts for their cakes and determine the appropriate serving size for your son. You can probably talk to someone at your venue about ensuring your son's slice of cake is a certain size if you determine your son shouldn't have a normal size slice.

Hugs to you for being brave for your son and all you must be doing to help him adjust right now. My FH's diagnosis came when he was 23. Of course it was hard for him, but it was also hard for his mom and I. It's hard to watch someone you love have to deal with this, especially in the beginning.

@kiwi are you talking about Luke and Jedi!? I ordered a shirt that's helping them make their documentary. I love them!

Edit: I got too excited and didn't finish reading your comment lol

Go for the real cake and adjust his insulin for dinner. I've been type 1 diabetic for 22 years and would not recommend sugar free cakes.
