California 2021 brides!

I came across this LA times news article (linked to thread) and I’m seeking insight on reception restrictions. I was shocked to see an article today that said all receptions were banned, even if we are in the lowest tier (yellow). My venue (an outdoor ceremony and reception at a hotel in Los Angeles) has mentioned that they are moving full steam ahead and plan on holding 100 person weddings this summer and fall.
My concern is that hotels will obviously have to follow the state protocols. If we are in tier yellow (less than 1% transmission) but are prohibited to hold receptions, what are we to do? This is frustrating and quite frankly very vague. The only thing lower than yellow tier is no restrictions at all, so should California brides except to not be allowed to have receptions this season? Even if people are vaccinated, socially distanced, masked etc? Hotels will have to follow whatever the state protocols are at that time, and if this is how it is going to be I would rather plan an alternative now.
Are there any California brides that have received factual information on this? My wedding planner doesn’t have any insight. My hotel doesn’t have any insight. I am even willing to take this issue up with the state if I have to. I have spent way too much money and invested way too much time to not be allowed to have a safe outdoor reception in yellow tier with less than 1% state transmission while other things like indoor gyms, indoor pools can open at 25%-50%. (Rant over)

Smart move on their behalf - grey areas leave more room for leniency. I would imagine that counties / venues can only make it stricter and not looser?

Not sure if if it's been asked or answered - but would backyard wedding's fall under the same guidelines and not get stuck in the "private gathering" category?

Yes, basically counties would only be able to make things stricter if they wanted. Whatever the state puts out is the foundation and cannot be changed. They did say that the state could loosen those restrictions as time goes on and transmission becomes lower into the fall season.

They did not mention backyard weddings but I would assume that backyard weddings will fall under the gathering guidance and not the private event guidance due to the fact that it’s your backyard. Nobody is stopping you from holding that event. Where you might run into an issue is that private event vendors and catering might have to follow the private event guidelines even in a backyard event. I didn’t hear any clarification though.

The guidelines that the state will be releasing hopefully today are specifically catered to receptions indoor and outdoor. All of the updates that I posted from the clubhouse are updates on wedding receptions. Anything that has to do with the ceremony is already listed under “cultural ceremonies” on the state website.

I just want to note that I am not involved in the guideline hearings in any way and just a listening as a bride. Please follow @savecaevents as they have the official guidelines! I do not want to give people the wrong information as I do not have direct access to this information.

I believe there will be more in depth guidance when the state actually posts it to the page. However, in the meeting they specifically said they didn’t want to mention the words dancing to the state. They intentionally wanted the state to leave dancing out of the guidelines. If it’s not on paper then it’s technically allowed. It will depend on the venue and county as well though. They said that the venue and county could add their own guidelines if they felt necessary.

Details will be coming out in a couple of weeks and will vary by county. I would assume that if bar and restaurants are allowed to function now that private events will be able to serve food and drinks. As far as live music goes, they updated it as of April 1st:

Our venue that cancelled our June 6th date because of a lack of guidance STILL won’t let us have our event now because it would be “too expensive to open in June for 1 event”. Fortunately we found another venue that can accommodate us.

Chris, I’m sorry you are going through this. Honestly, that venue isn’t worth the worry on your special day. Now that new guidelines are coming out I’m sure you’ll find something just as special. You should want a venue who cares about the people they host. That’s your old venue’s loss! Good luck xo

Hey Felicia, thank you so much for your kind words. We are beyond excited and grateful that we can finally have our special day that’s been postponed since 2020.

We found another venue that we are really excited about, and you’re 100% right out our old venue (Bel-Air Bay club) though beautiful really didn’t care about us at all. So we are glad to be at a better one!
