Camera for Honeymoon

Farah, on February 9, 2017 at 12:41 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 15

We're going to Maui in August and I'm torn between whether we should get a GoPro or just put our smartphones on a selfie stick and take pics that way. Obviously the latter saves us $400 Smiley tongue. I'm more interested in pictures over video. Thoughts? Experiences?

What do you think you will be doing in Maui? We are going to Hawaii for our honeymoon as well but we got an off brand Go Pro because we love to snorkel and bought the underwater case so we can take videos of all the awesome fish while snorkeling.

Which brand did you get? We're not snorkeling. We're planning on doing Road to Hana, Haleakala, a Luau, sunset cruise, relaxing at the beach and parasailing.

Sara, what kind of learning curve is there to a Go Pro/off brand model? I have never used one.

It's funny because for my honeymoon, I was too focused on the wedding and forgot all about photos. So, we both had our phones, and I do feel like that may have limited our photos of the trip. We are going on a trip this summer and I'm planning on bringing my normal camera, it's not waterproof. For what you are doing, that should be fine. Although, Sara, I am curious about the off brand Go Pro because we want to snorkel as well!

The brand we got is DBPower. Just quick google search says they are about $40-$80 depending on where you get it from and we bought some accessories for it from aliexpress for cheap. I forget what we paid for the actual camera. We meant to use it when we went o Mexico last october but forgot it at home Smiley sad

I havent tested it but FH did and he said it was easy to use. We never owned a go pro so I'm not totally sure of the differences in interface.

For the parasailing I've seen amazing Go Pro shots... that is the one thing I think you need the go pro for.

We are getting an Olympus Tough Waterproof camera. It was recommended by a handful of people here. Waterproof, sand proof, shock proof.

Go Pros are really neat to have for some things (my husband uses it when we do mud runs), but I'm a fan of the "indestructible" cameras! Like MeettheBrowns said... waterproof, sandproof, shockproof.

Here are a couple of them (I have the Panasonic and used that for years, but my husband recently got me the Nikon one and I haven't gotten to use it much yet):

I prefer to use actual cameras though, rather than phones (although some phones take amazing pictures now!), but that's a personal preference.

ETA: I took the Panasonic camera to the Bahamas when we visited a couple years ago and took all my photos on it! We got some really neat snorkeling ones Smiley smile

    Check out this camera: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X9Y2NFO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2J76JWS3Y193H&coliid=I2WVQSFDV75C24&psc=1

I wanted to buy a waterproof camera for our honeymoon but really didnt want to spend $300 or more on a camera I will not use that often (I already have 2 other good cameras that are not waterproof). This came up in my research and has good reviews and is only $40!

I found this video to show the difference between the DBPower and the Go Pro 3..i found it informational and if you are only going to use it on vacations the $300 price difference is worth the DBpower to me. Thats why we got it.

ETA: We wont be using these cameras for stills. I have a brand new Nikon 3400 that I will be taking with me for all stills but we got this for action and video.

We love our GoPro! We take it pretty much everywhere. We usually keep it in video mode and take snapshots from the videos...makes for some awesome photos! Totally worth it in my opinion. I actually want to buy another one lol

We looove our GoPro! I bought it for DH as a "reverse engagement gift" Smiley smile It's amazing for underwater pictures and video, takes really high quality pictures, it's durable, and it's small so it's easy to travel with. One of the sneaky benefits is that the camera lens is so wide that you can literally just snap a selfie without checking to see if you're in the picture, because it captures literally everything. I definitely recommend it for the honeymoon!

FH won a GoPro Hero 5 (I think) from his work Christmas party & it's AMAZING. If you can afford it (I don't even known how much they are honestly) totally do it.

GoPros are seriously amazing. My twin brother played for Ohio State Buckeyes and when they went to the national championship, my older brother threw it down to him on the field. it has the most amazing video and pictures. more of the unexpected that he didn't even realize as he was shooting videos and pictures!

I would get an off-brand GoPro and also use smartphones for photos. I brought a GoPro to Hawaii and used it way more than my Canon DSLR. They have some GoPro off brands on Amazon for very reasonable prices, and reviews seem great.

Or maybe register for a GoPro?
