Can 3pm be considered evening?

AG, on April 29, 2018 at 11:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

Maybe i'm overthinking, but i'm working on invites right now. Our wedding will begin at three. I really want to write "three in the evening" vs "three in the afternoon" because I want to convey that this is a nicer, more formal wedding, and afternoon makes it sound less formal to me.

Thoughts?

3 is not evening. No matter how formal you’re trying to convey, it’s still afternoon. Anything before 6 is afternoon.

A 3 pm ceremony is definitely an afternoon ceremony. You can't change things just because you think it sounds more formal.

There is even controversy about whether 5 pm is afternoon or evening. The line in the sand starts at 6 pm, being clearly evening.

My ceremony starts at 3pm as well and it days three o'clock in the afternoon.
Unless you live on the South Pole when sometimes there's months with no daylight (that'd be awesome btw), I believe it'd have to read "afternoon"

I agree with the time of day helping set the formality of the wedding. I feel like evening weddings are more formal then afternoon but you can’t change 3pm to evening, it’s clearly afternoon. If you want a more formal wedding vibe you should have it at an evening time.

No way, that sounds so silly. 3pm is afternoon. There's no way around it

No. I would just try to convey with the design of your invites that it is a more formal event.

Thanks guys, you're right! I decided to just go with "three o'clock" so no biggie either way.

It's afternoon but you technically don't need to specify. Most formal invites I see just list the time no need to add "in the afternoon"

My wedding is at 4:30 in the afternoon.... so 3:00pm is definitely afternoon. It never occurred to me that my wedding sounds less formal that way? I think the guests will assume it is formal based on the look of the invite. Maybe just don't say afternoon or evening if it bothers you?

I just left the afternoon part off, and had it say ceremony to begin at three o'clock with dinner and dancing to follow. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together would recognize that it wasn't at 3 am, and the dinner part conveys a little bit of the formality.

Three is afternoon, evening does not start until six. A 5:30 wedding is still afternoon, believe it or not!

11am starts afternoon if anyone cares, lol!
