Can a A-line wedding dress be altered into a mermaid style dress?

The A Line dress is my wedding dress but I am in love with the mermaid style dress. Is it possible for my dress to be “transformed” into the bottom one? Obviously with flower attachments but can it be done?

The A-line dress looks (from the picture) as if it has a waistline/definite delineation between bodice and skirt. This would make transforming it to the smooth mermaid look difficult and awkward. Plus, again going by the picture, it looks as if the 1st dress has multiple layers. The only way to know for sure is to bring the dress to a qualified seamstress.

Definitely contact a very skilled seamstress and see what they say. I would be very wary of making such huge changes- there are just so many ways in which it could go wrong and you’d be left with a dress you hate and can’t return to its original form. Plus the cost of making that many changes won’t be cheap with a top notch seamstress. It would probably be safer and more cost effective to just purchase a mermaid style dress you love.

I agree with this. It might be able to be done by a skilled seamstress, but it could end up costing you as much as if not more than a new dress altogether.

Yes you can. The dress I got was altered by a bride who bought the same dress at the bridal salon I did! I thought about it and changed my mind because I fell in love with the A line dress when I put it on and don’t want to change it. Plus it will be a pricey alteration to make!

I agree with the others that it might be able to be done, but would likely be cheaper and safer to purchase a dress which is what you really want - you could end up spending a fortune and not loving the end result.

Generally not. The bodice structure for a fitted or mermaid is too different. If possible, you’ll pay a fortune in alterations and probably not get the look you want. Try both on and see what style you like best!
