Can a Catholic Priest Sign a Marriage License?

Shawn, on November 22, 2019 at 10:33 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6
Hi everyone!

My fiancé and I are having a Catholic ceremony and I was recently told by one of my vendors that she was told by another couple that priests don’t sign the marriage license only the marriage register through the church. Would we still have to go to the court once our ceremony is done to be legally married?

I’m not completely certain, but I’m pretty sure a priest can sign a license. My sister got married in the Catholic Church and her priest signed it!

A priest signed our license. I do believe that priests and ministers have the authority from the state to conduct valid marriages.

I’ve never heard of such a thing. My first wedding was in a Methodist church and the pastor signed the license. If I remember correctly, he also filed it for us with the township. So unless it’s some weird state law, I don’t see why a Catholic priest wouldn’t be able to sign.

I didn’t get married by a priest but a deacon. He signed our license.
A catholic wedding is a legal wedding. Don’t stress.

Check with your state. I live on a state border and we are not going to be married in my state. The rules between the states (possibly also counties) vary greatly. You need to know when you can get the license, whether both or one or you have to go get it, etc.

The important thing is to be married by someone recognized and licensed to perform weddings in your state. If you are booking a wedding in your church, they should have a priest that meets the qualifications. If you have questions, they should be able to answer them.
