Can a wedding cake be shipped?

LoveLoveLove, on May 17, 2017 at 7:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 31

Our wedding is on an island so we're limited in the number of vendors available. We want mini cakes (like the pic below) instead of a large cake and we're finding that several bakeries don't make them. I'd like to expand our search but this means the cakes would need to be shipped.

Does anyone have experience with having their cake shipped? If so, what was your experience?

I have never had a cake shipped. I really wouldn't want to trust that UPS, FedEx or USPS would deliver your wedding cake in a timely manner and in tact. You should probably just get a large cake from a bakery near where you are getting married at.

We have had cheesecakes and Smith Island Cakes mailed to our venue. They arrived all intact and perfect.

Food can be shipped, sure. But you probably want to find a bakery that has experience in shipping their cakes.

    I wouldn't risk it.

I would be dreading the moment when you open that box and find a squished, ruined cake... I mean, I'm sure they have procedures in place for such items, but I'm not confident they are always followed.

    You can have food shipped.

Ask yourself though- Do you really want your wedding cake handled by random people?

Is it a slab cake? Overnight? A cake will go stale within a couple of hours if not frozen. Will it be decorated? Can you not ask the resort or hotel if they have a pastry chef who can create something similar?

If you can't find a bakery that can ship cakes or cupcakes, you could maybe consider cookies. There are several online companies as well as Etsy that can do custom cookies and ship them.

@SSJKarigan, that's definitely something in the back of my mind. Especially since it would be too late to have it corrected.

@TreeShade, those are my thoughts as well. Everything can be shipped! If it's packed properly, it will make it to the venue in tact - atleast that's what I hope.

@JessieJV, it's not a slab cake. We want the design in the picture I posted. We like the idea of mini cakes so I guests can take it home if they don't want to eat it at the wedding.

@MotheroftheBride, I hadn't considered cookies. I have my heart set on a cake or cakes.

@KittyPrawn, that would be one of the first questions I ask the bakery (if they have experience shipping their cakes). They'll be responsible for packing and if it's packed right, I would think it would be delivered in tact.

@Jenny and @Imthemom, that gives me hope! If you can have live crawfish shipped, surely something as delicate as a wedding cake can be shipped as well.

I know it's unconventional to have it shipped. I really hope someone has had it done successfully who can provide tips.

@firstoneat56, they provide desserts, but don't do cakes. They have provided a list of recommended vendors and those are the bakeries that I started with.

I would absolutely not trust a cake to be shipped. I even fret about delivery of a professional cake, because I've had cakes shift just traveling in my car for 30 minutes

Thanks Chip and MBean. I'm not ready to give up on my vision yet, but I appreciate your input.

I'm sure you could have cake shipped, but I would not risk it, I would be shitting myself until I opened that box, and if it's ruined? Then what? I think it's better to just have a regular cake made locally and you can have to-go boxes set out if anyone wants to take their slice home. I get the vision, but for me it would not be worth the stress.

My baker has shipped cakes before, but she does it by air courier not Fedex or something. I'm sure it costs an arm and a leg. I didn't ask because I don't have any need of that service, but I saw it mentioned in a few of her reviews.

Try to find near by bakery first and do your research when it comes to having your mini cakes shipped my brain would be over worked wondering about the cake being messed up good luck.

I see cake shipping as an accident waiting to happen. I wouldn't!

The risk in my opinion is too great for me. I know they have insurance and money back guarantees but I just wouldn't want one more thing to make me angst.

I tried to have a cake shipped for taste testing for my unsuccessful DW. The bakery I wanted did not ship cakes because of the frosting, but I did have another place say that they could. Guess it just depends.
