Can a wedding cake be shipped?

Our wedding is on an island so we're limited in the number of vendors available. We want mini cakes (like the pic below) instead of a large cake and we're finding that several bakeries don't make them. I'd like to expand our search but this means the cakes would need to be shipped. Does anyone have...

Does anyone have experience with having their cake shipped? If so, what was your experience?

I certainly wouldn't trust it for a regular cake, but with mini cakes you don't have to worry about assembly and the icing looks like fondant which is usually pretty sturdy. Still I think I'd try and convince one of the local bakers to expand their repertoire before resorting to shipping.

I wouldn't ship a wedding cake, or mini cakes.

But, I can say that for food products Fedex is the best shipper to choose.

I definitely wouldn't fly with it.

And just a side note - If you're getting married on an island outside of the US - the cake has to go through customs and many places have restrictions!

Those mini cakes look like Petit Fours. My mom used to order those from Swiss Colony. Are they the same thing?

How about getting them the day before you leave and taking them with you on the plane instead of an actual carryon? You could each carry a box of cake.

You can freeze them and take them out of the freezer immediately before you leave for the airport, then put them in the fridge at the resort if they allow that. Yes, you can fly with them, I have seen it done. Check out this link: http://www.thecustomcakeboutique.com/single-post/2015/11/05/Flying-your-wedding-cake-abroad

this is from the TSA Website:

    Pies and Cakes

    Carry On Bags: Yes

    Checked Bags: Yes

The island is off the coast of NC so we won't have to worry about flying with it. We're going to get there Friday and the wedding is Sunday so I don't want to take it myself.

@Sarah, I'm still calling around to find someone who can do them.

@FutureBennis, no, these aren't from Swiss Colony or petit fours.

Would you happen to be getting married on Ocracoke? I lived there as a teenager and could contact my friends that still live there.

On a different note, my parents sent cakes for my birthday when I was in college. Bake Me a Wish ships cakes. I've received maybe 4 or 5 in my life, and only one was damaged beyond recognition. However, every one of them had at least a little damage. I would never trust any sort of mail or courier with my wedding cake.

@Ann, no, we're getting married on Bald Head Island. I think it's too far from Ocracoke to have a bakery deliver it to the venue. Travel costs from Wilmington (30 mins away) are astronomical because of the barge/ferry fees!

Thank you for sharing your experience with having cakes shipped. This is the type of info I'm looking for. Since they are mini cakes, I could always order a few extra in case some are damaged. I'm still researching, but this is good info.
