Had a kidney infection from the end of December to the middle of January. I was first on Bactrim, then Macrobid, then Keflex. I am over it now, and stopped taking Keflex about two weeks ago. I am a few days late on my period though, and I am wondering if it is late due to antibiotics or the infection itself. I have not had sex with my husband since this all happened because we are waiting till I know I'm okay. I am seriously freaking out since I have read that it could be cancer, etc. Also, please dont say go to my doctor. I have no insurance, and we have been to the ER 5 times since December.

Stress can also affect your cycle and it seems as if you have a lot of stress going on as well.

I do agree with others about consulting with a medical provider though.

Antibiotics can affect all sort of things. They kill the bad bacteria from your infection but can also kill the good bacteria in your gut that help to regulate your hormones among other things. If you're concerned, take a pregnancy test. If it continues to be a problem you should talk with your doctor.

I was just hospitalized for a week for a very severe kidney infection and sepsis in late November. My body was pretty much shutting down when I went in. I was on Leviquin for 2 weeks after. My period didn't come until mid January.

I'm not a doctor, so I'm not giving you medical advice. But, I'll tell you what I've learned while currently going through it myself: Antibiotics might affect your menstrual cycle, but it's more likely because of the stress on your body from the kidney infection, especially if it happened before ovulation. Also, kidney infections are usually a result of UTI's. You might be irregular for about 5 or 6 months. This is normal, as far as an infection goes.

You need to see a doctor for a follow up, especially since you just recently had a kidney infection. They need to make sure the infection is clear, and they can reassure you about your menstrual cycle.

As a medical professional, I'm begging you to please not post on the internet for medical advice.

Find a planned parenthood near you. Stop using the ER as a primary care physician. PP can make a payment plan for you. Being late by a few days is hardly an indication for cancer- get off the Internet and go to a doctor. I don't care if that isn't what you want to hear, it's what you need to do.

Shouldn't. But you should use back up protection if you are on birth control and/or not trying to get pregnant right now. Just in case.

Another medical professional here. This is a bad place to come for advice, like pp's said.

Illness/antibiotics can interfere with the menstrual cycle, but for a late period, a pregnancy test is necessary. This is general advice and not intended to be specific to this poster.

Thanks y'all! I was not asking for pro advice (though I am extremely happy some professionals answered) but more or so asking if any ladies here have been through anything similar. And update: I started this morning. I didn't want to leave this thread without 1. Thanking y'all and 2. Not updating everyone. Can not stand when I run across a thread that has a huge unresolved question.
