The first looks like a dahlia. The second looks like a thistle (in less confident on this one).

The first looks like a dahlia style or football style mum to me. The second one looks tropical but I don’t really know with any certainty

The second one seems to be wild. It's outdoors at a park in Louisville Kentucky around a bunch of weeds and daisies. No one could tell me what it was though. Thanks guys for the help on the first.

Ah! Okay then, I did a little hunting and it looks like its part of the aster family, there's a few different names but the first one listed is 'bristle thistle' - the link leads to a US wildflower database

Dahlia or mum would be my guess for the first. The second definitely looks like a wildflower and not a cultivated one. It does look like a thistle on top, but not the base (which is usually a spiky bulb like structure), but it could be because the flower is immature.

    It could also be:

    American basket-flower, Centaurea americana

    Nodding thistle, Carduus nutans

    Cardoon, Cynara cardunculus

If you are looking for flowers for your wedding, if you look up "thistle like flower" you may be able to find a cultivated variant (thistles tend to be kind of rough and spiky, so while pretty they aren't exactly what I'd want to be holding in a bouquet). Or head to your local garden center and ask a gardener/florist there to help with the plant ID or help you find a suitable cultivated flower that would give you a similar look.

You're right! Now that you say that I remember the stems being very spiky because my son wanted to pick one and I had to stop him. The thistles online aren't very pretty but they are similar and almost identical. These were just huge and pretty. It doesn't look like a bouquet flower though, so I will take that advice! Thanks!

The second is definitely a thistle. It's very common in celtic design Smiley smile

If you like that but don't want the spikes, another option is sea holly, which is a bit more blue.

If you like the spikiness, teasels are another option!

I agree with others about the thistle but I can tell you for certain the first is not a dahlia - it is a chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemums come in a few varieties and while I don't know the exact name of that variety (others are more flat per se), I can comfortably say it is definitely a chrysanthemum - they're my grandmother's favourite, I literally buy these for her every birthday and mother's day!

Thanks! I had been looking around for fresh flowers online because I intend to do a diy bouquet, and I loved the Dahlia. Unfortunately, all the websites say buyer beware because they can be beautiful one day and ugly the next because they are so temperamental and that they don't ship well at all. Also, it didn't really look exactly like the Dahlias I had looked at and my two in my mother's day bouquet weren't being temperamental at all. So thank you for clarifying! Flowers can be tough to identify so thanks everyone else for your help!
