Can I grow my wedding flowers?

Private User, on June 5, 2014 at 2:22 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

I'd like to use just native wildflowers and grasses for my wedding flowers, and I'm toying with the idea of growing them myself. My main concern is that my wedding will be in the middle of July, and I'm not sure which flowers, if any, in a wildflower seed mix will be blooming at that time. Has anyone ever grown their own wedding flowers?

I would be so extremly jealous if you pull this off lol. I LOVE the look of wildflowers! Sorry I have no tips. But like you said make sure to get ones that will be in bloom at the time of your wedding. Good luck!

I would look into purchasing wholesale flowers as an alternative. Growing your own flowers is not really an easy thing to do, and if you have no gardening experience, I wouldn't attempt it for the first time for your wedding flowers!

Places like www.fiftyflowers.com and www.bloomsbythebox.com have wildflowers available at good prices, and will list exactly when each kind of flower is available by month.

Blooms by the box also has a few "wildflower combo packs", so you can get several coordinated varieties for a single price:

My mom and grandpa are growing all of my flowers! My grandpa used to own a greenhouse so I trust he knows what to do! But my wedding isn't until September and they have already planted everything except sunflowers

If you've never done it, it's worth a shot but have a back up plan. Maybe go to a nursery and talk to someone there and get some tips on which flowers to grow for that season.

We are!! well kind of. A friend of my fiance's has a green house and knows what to do. We want tulips so we are purchasing the bulbs and still need to figure out what we are paying him for this. My sister is going to put them together for us. Our wedding is Mother's Day Weekend so we are running into a lot of disgusted voices over the phone. And also the raise the price. I am all for growing your own but if you are not sure on something.. have a backup plan!

What a creative and clever idea! Have a backup plan in place in case they don't turn out the way you envision.

We're growing some of our own flowers! FH and I have a small community garden that we have planted flowers in, and we've enlisted some of the other gardeners to plant flowers for us. We have dahlias, lilies, zinnias and sunflowers coming up all over.

But we only anticipate using them at the head table, and maybe a few other arrangements. We have also hired a florist who grows her own flowers and will be doing the centerpieces and ceremony decor.

I think it's easy to underestimate how many flowers you'll really need to grow your entire wedding in your backyard. Particularly if you're an inexperienced gardener or don't know when the flowers will be in bloom. I toyed with the idea of trying to grow all of my own, but so much can go wrong, and I'd be devastated if they didn't work out.

So basically, I've planted them and will be thrilled if they work out, but if not, it's not the end of the world.

It may be too late, but you can try growing some now and see if they bud. I know nothing about planting and gardening, but you can try. That's why I'm happy we picked 2015. We are having mini pumpkins incorporated, so this year I'm going to try to grow my own as a test. If it turns out horrible, I will not bother and just buy them for the wedding in 2015. But I have the full year to figure it out! Plus, I get to go to the photography location at the time of the event one year early to see about lighting and whatnot Smiley smile

    Good luck!

Oh, and if you find that growing them doesn't work out, you can always make a grocery store run the day before your wedding to make your own bouquets. That can be the backup plan.

I also grow flowers at my house and I have cut flowers available for personal use basically all spring and summer. It can be done. Honestly, start planting now and follow the charts on seed packets for bloom times for your region.
