Can you alter a ring setting?

Shelby, on December 4, 2016 at 3:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Okay, basically I'm trying to condense a rant. My fiancé bought me a BEAUTIFUL aquamarine engagement ring and I love it. It's perfect. But, it sits too close to my finger for a band to fit flush. Even curved bands are very awkward. (it's an oval shaped stone.) I just got back from Helzberg to talk about options. They told me that the setting can't be altered, so I either have to pick other setting or have an awkward curved band soldered on. Is this true, or are they just trying to sell me expensive and ugly rings?

By the time you take the setting off the shank and replace it with a setting that sits higher, you're basically creating a new ring. Can you find a setting you like and transfer the stone?

I can, and we looked at those options. I'm just worried that as soon as I change it, it will have less value because it wasn't the band my FH picked out. But the stone is gorgeous and I love it most of all, anyways. I just want to be able to have a separate wedding band that sits flush

Maybe take it to a local jeweler that can custom make something that fits it.

It's a beautiful ring! I don't blame you for not wanting to mess with it more than necessary.

Custom route! I know it can be expensive, but I justify with the fact that it's one of very few things that last after the wedding day andddddd you see it everyday, so you want it to be exactly what you like!

And a jeweler can work within a Price point!

    Honestly, I'd forego a band.

Wow, is that real aquamarine? Large stones like that are rate, and if it's clear, very expensive!

On a more related note, after you pay to reset it, you could probably just have a custom wedding ring built instead. Compare prices before you start rebuilding.

I would look into a custom band with a local jeweler. It's worth the conversation

Wear the band on one Hand and your engagement ring on the other. That's what I'm doing. I didn't want a curved band to fit around my ering. So now they both stand out on their own!

We looked at enhancers, they aren't an option either. It would just go around the band and have this awkward and hideous gap. We're going to check out local jewelers and see if we can't get something built. If not, then we're going to replace the setting and keep this one. Then one day our kids could put a stone in it and we can start an heirloom tradition! I really don't want to wear one on each hand and I REALLY can't stand any kind of a gap. I'm too OCD. It is a real aquamarine, the stone is just GORGEOUS. It's one reason why I'm not really attached to the setting. I feel like the stone is just breathtaking on it's own. We've priced a setting I like, it'd only be about $600. So we're going to check out with local jewelers too.

You can always wear just your e-ring or wear it on your right hand and your wedding band on your left

I wish I never went custom. I had full control over it. I was able to pick it out and design it and I would’ve been able to spend a few more thousand if I bought one that wasn’t custom and it’s just the same old halo that everyone has. I want to change the setting so bad that’s why I’m in this message board. I sent the ring back twice and I changed it five times in the process. I actually don’t know if I’ll ever be happy. I want something that doesn’t need to be cleaned every few months. Halo is like a swiffer, it picks up everything
