I'm curious, can you change anything about your first name when you change your last name? I don't want to change my actual first name, just the spelling. It's phonetically pronounced K-ear-sten. Most girls I know with my name spell it Kiersten. My parents just decided to make my life annoying by spelling it Kirsten, which is supposed to sounds like Ker-sten. I've already had contracts messed up because the vendor assumed my name was spelled Kiersten...because, well, it's supposed to be!

What is it with men naming their daughters after ex-gfs? My dad named my oldest sister after an ex. And my brother agreed to his daughter's name because it was the name of one of the skanks from "America's Next Top Model." WTF.

Huh. My dad gave me my middle name (Selene) after a character from a sci fi book... But he doesn't remember which.

KM... depending on your state's rules, yes. Here's how it works in Iowa... on your marriage certificate both parties write their full name prior to marriage, and then after marriage. You can change your entire name if you wish. However, it only affects things from that day forward. If you want everything going back to be changed, you still have to petition the court for a name change.

I've looked into it a lot because I'm probably changing my entire name when I get married. My name is Jesse and I'm fucking tired of being called Mr. Haven't decided if I'm going to change the spelling (Jessi) or go with Jessica. Considering even changing my middle and maiden name while I'm at it.

I plan on changing my middle name when I get married, so I am hoping it is not much more money or too involved! Good luck with the name change!

I always thought your name was pronounced Kearsten and not Kersten. I love Kirsten. It's one of my favorite names.

You have to do a name change with the courthouse. Your last name can be immediately changed due to marriage, but regarding first names, you would have to legally petition the courts for a name change. It's relatively inexpensive, less than $200. That fee includes your request being run in a local paper for 30 days (In Atlanta, it's the Daily Report), court fees, filing fees, etc... You will be given a court date once you submit your petition and in court, the judge will ask you why you want to change your name and approve or deny the request. The only time I've seen it denied is when it involved a minor child and the legal guardian didn't approve the request.
