Can you negotiate with hotel block?

The Sealpups, on May 13, 2019 at 4:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

The proposal I was sent was for $250 (king) and $269 (queen and queen) a night and apparently i'm saving $30-$40. The hotel is for staybridge suites. With my own research, the price is about $270-$300 around the time we're getting married (end of summer). A planner suggested that I can negotiate with them - possibly ask the rooms to be at least $245, ask for a complimentary bride-groom room, and a complimentary meeting room (to possibly house the rehearsal dinner). Would this be too much?

An insider said that couples are normally so busy that they pick the numbers that are given to them right away and without asking for amenities (such as a bridal-groom suite or complimentary meeting room). Is this too much to ask?

Thanks!

The worst they can say is no and present the initial offer again.

I'd just ask, and get quotes from other surrounding hotels too!

I like the idea of extra stuff thrown in!

Is the planner your wedding planner? They may have more pull in this than you if they have contacts and deal with the vendor. I know when I was searching for hotel blocks, one hotel came back as way too much compared to the others and I responded back (in a nice way) saying such and I did not hear back from them. So I definitely think that your wedding planner may have better luck here depending on the location and how popular the hotel is.

I would get multiple quotes from surrounding hotels as well.

The Knot has a tool called hotel planner that was very helpful! You set up what you want, and can recieve quotes from different hotels. We used that site and then contacted the manager of one of the hotels for a lower price.

TLDR, it doesn't hurt to ask, but try hotelplanner.com via the Knot if they won't budge and you need a lower option.

It can’t hurt to ask. Hotels want rooms to get booked so it depends on the area that you’re getting married and how busy they get. If you’re getting married in a tourist area during a busy time of year hotels are less likely to work with you and throw in a bunch of stuff because they don’t need to.

I do not think it is too good to be true, but I do think that a wedding planner will have a better chance. I would definitely ask since the worst you can get a is a no!

You might also check the prices online--on their website, with AAA, etc. If they are offering a better price elsewhere, that can help with negotiations.

Hi KT4ever! I work for sales in a hotel and do social blocks Smiley smile You should absolutely be able to negotiate that rate down and ask for more things! If not a comp stay for bride and groom, then deff an upgrade! We work with Kleinfeld Hotel Blocks a lot - No cost to you, they go and find hotel blocks in your area and negotiate on your behalf. Kinda like a travel agent! I will be using them for mine! Best of luck.

I would certainly ask. The very least they can do is give you a complimentary room on the wedding night.

When looking at hotels there was one I was more interested in because it was closer to attraction for my guests. But they were $30 more a night than the one we chose. I asked if they could at least come down $10 or provide us with a complimentary room. Nope, they wouldn't budge so I chose the cheaper hotel instead.

I would definitely ask. I was between Staybridge & The Marriott. Staybridge had better rates, but the Marriot had a shuttle & hotel bar (plus I liked the idea that guests were able to obtain or use their existing rates).
I told Marriott what Staybridge was offering, they counter their rates. They are also going to give us 3x the amount of point accrued by our guests & if we hit a # of 30 rooms, they will comp us one night. Oh, and they completely waived the pet free for anyone booking in our hotel block.

A lot of places offer a suite (or a very reduced rate) to the Bride and Groom, although sometimes that depends on the number of "room nights" booked in your block. I know if we hit the number we think we will, we get the suite for free (1/2 price if we are short). We are also having them cater the rehearsal dinner for about 50 people so they are giving us that room for free. I would ask what their block rates for a wedding are before starting negotiations since there is a chance they already offer what you want. If you negotiate right off the bat you might actually end up getting less.
