Can you redo a marriage certificate?

sam, on April 4, 2021 at 9:25 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9
My husband and I have been together for almost 10 years and married for almost 4 years. We thought to celebrate our love we would renew our vows. Now hate is where my discussion comes in. At the time when we got married one of the witnesses and the person that married us were good friends and now couple years down the roads we are not ( a lot of stuff happened) and had left us with a bitter taste and would really like to redo our license and have our best friend of many years marry us and have new witnesses.
Is that possible? I haven't been able to find a clear answer.
I really hope this makes sense. Any help is appreciated!!
Thank you!

I don't think this is possible unless you divorce and get remarried. You can only legally be married once unless you divorce.

It is a legal document, so unless there is an error that needs to be changed, I don't think that's an option. Does your certificate even have the witnesses on it? In my state, only our information is listed on the marriage certificate we got once the license was submitted.

No it is not possible. The only way if you’re married to be able to apply for a new marriage license is to get divorced.

It doesn’t sound simple, how often are you viewing your marriage certificate? Maybe just keep it in the safe out of sight and you won’t be bothered by it.

The legal document is permanent. As other posters said, you can't change it unless you get divorced and remarry.

However, you can get a nice, commemorative certificate that you can have signed by new witnesses. This is not legally binding.

A good amount of this depends on your state and county. Some will allow you to do an amendment to the original, but it is a massive headache for all involved. Some will allow an amendment, but only to things like the spelling of a name. There is often a time frame for when these things are allowed, and I would guess that 4 years is outside of that. Check with your county recorder's office to see what is and isn't allowed, and if there are any time restrictions.

It's a legal document so you cannot change the original witnesses. The only way to change it is to divorce and remarry.
