Cancel Wedding and Forfeit Deposits

Kari, on April 26, 2020 at 3:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

I'm just wondering if any other Covid-19 couples outright canceled their event and forfeited all of your deposits? I'm so stressed trying to decide what to do and feel like postponing would just drag on all of the suspense and anxiety even longer. We have enough saved to pay for the wedding and put down about 20% of the total cost in deposits already, but my FH's company is placing everyone on rolling furloughs and reduced pay, and my employer may also be cutting positions or pay. I already feel so stressed and overwhelmed and just don't know what to do. Everything feels like a total disappointment and I'm not even excited about our wedding anymore. I'm just heartbroken.

You might try talking to your vendors. Under the circumstances, they may be willing to give you a break on the deposits. And then once the pandemic is under control and your economic situation improves, you can decide whether to have a celebration, and if so, what.

Only 1 of my vendors was willing to give me full refund if we flat out cancelled and that was only a $400 expense which isnt a lot compared to how much money we invested into everything.

We’ve already communicated with all of our vendors and none of the deposits are refundable. Understandably this is their livelihood and if they refunded everyone impacted they would be bankrupt or close.

Yes, we’ve communicated with all of our vendors and none will given refunds. It makes sense, as if they refunded all of the events canceled by this they’d be out of business entirely.

I’m sorry! This isn’t a fun position for ANYONE to be in. We cancelled earlier this week. We’re getting most of our deposits back. Only a partial from the DJ, none from the videographer. Otherwise everyone is giving us money back. Since we’re going to do an intimate ceremony, we’ll still use the videographer since they won’t refund us. We chose to outright cancel for exactly how you’re feeling: I’m no longer excited about wedding planning and really don’t want to plan another. 💗

We cancelled our April 2020 wedding and have been seeking refunds form our vendors. Majority have been working with us to provide an agreed upon % back. Others have not. It's worth asking for them to work with you. I'm currently furloughed and it didn't make sense to push the date back when things are so uncertain. We still got married last week via zoom with all of our original guests who were invited to the wedding and will plan on a much smaller celebration when it's safe again.

I'm sorry. It's such a rough spring in so many ways, and dealing with this doesn't help. I know what you mean about just wanting to cancel it. FH and I didn't feel like re-planning our wedding. We're hoping to have some sort of party with our local guests to celebrate our wedding...someday...when this has all calmed down, but even that is up in the air if there's a second wave.

We're planning to use a few of our vendors still (hair/makeup, photographer) when we go to the courthouse, and are hoping to use the florist if we do have a celebration of our marriage later. We've pretty much lost the other deposits. We'd actually made two additional payments to our venue (in addition to the space for the ceremony and reception they were providing the food and drinks). FH had to fight them to get those payments back, but even then couldn't get our deposit

I’m in this process now and I know it’s going to be a nightmare we are cancelling too my fiancé lost his job and we just can’t afford it anymore or want this stress and pressure of keeping up with it. I paid 2 vendors in full and I’m going to do everything I can to get that money back. I know most deposits are not refundable so I’m not going to argue that but the rest of my money I want back.

Oh I really hope you can get back all of the extra money you spent. There is reason why you should not be able to get a refund for the services unrendered less your deposits. So sorry you are going through this!
