Cancel Wedding

So Here in Michigan, Banquet halls can only host weddings of 25 people. Because of this my venue has been closed since last August. They were only open for about 6 weeks when they were limited to 100 people to 10 people. Since it doesn't seem like our governor is gonna ease up on restrictions in time to adequality plan our July wedding, We decided to cancel our reception at the Venue and have a backyard wedding. Only problem is our contract states if we cancel less than six months before we have to pay 75% of the total cost of the minimum that we agreed to when we signed our contract. I know all venues are different but has anyone had any experience where the venue didn't enforce their cancelation policy because of covid.

I am in Michigan as well. I postponed instead of cancelled, so I haven't run into this specific issue, but have you talked with your venue? Does your contract state that you are allowed a certain number of people? I would ask them a few questions first to get an idea of if they'd be willing to waive the cancellation policy due to COVID or even ask them if they can compromise and let you cancel, but only lose your initial deposit (instead of having to pay 75% of total cost). All venues seem to be handling COVID differently, but I would start with asking your venue if they can work with you. I would contact them through email so it's in writing.
