Cancun or Punta Cana

I have been to Cancun/ Mexico area 7 years in an row and LOVE it, however lately there have been some crime issues that are slowly moving into tourism areas. If you are honeymooning this year, I think you would be fine and you can find some AMAZING all inclusive deals (1,500 per person with flight and all drinks/ food included for a week!) , however if you are planning further out you may want to wait to see if it improves/ gets worse. I went though this as well. From all opinions I’ve gotten I’ll summarize it for you! You can’t make a wrong decision but most people said they would choose Cancun over Punta Cana. There’s violence in both places but Mexico has been in the news a lot lately but as long as your staying on the resort it should be okay. We ended up booking for Cancun!

Both places are gorgeous! Cancun is more familiar to most people being in Mexico. The DR is a very beautiful island with a rich history. I agree, it may be better to monitor both the weather and the politics before choosing a resort. I'm sure you will love either location!

I went to Cancun (years) ago and it was GORGEOUS!!! We went on a couple day excursions too to there style 'theme' parks which is mostly snorkeling and there were a couple caves you could swim thru (Xcaret I believe was the cave one and GORGEOUS) it was beautiful and amazing that they also were all inclusive!

That said I agree with a PP about the crime. I went back in 2009 and 3 tourists had just been beheaded right before we went (we didn't know this prior) so like it's gorgeous and all but if you pick Cancun just make sure to not leave the resort area.

I've been to both and went with Cancun because it was a cheaper/fast flight. Can't really go wrong though both nice.

We are leave November 13 and coming back November 20 this year. I haven’t been to either but from pictures they are both so beautiful 😫😫😫

I went to Punta Cana when I was like 14, and it was incredibly gorgeous! I forgot the name of the place we stayed, but it was super fancy and really pretty, and even though I was 14 the bartender let me into the adult pool and let me sit at the bar while he served me pop and water.

We're going to Cancun in January. Everyone's talking about how dangerous Mexico is right now, but most people say to ignore it. As long as you don't go looking to get involved in the drug cartel or venture too far away from your resort, I think you'll be fine.

My parents went there a few years ago and loved it! I'm super excited to go. Our hotel is a little pricier, but I think it'll be worth it!

I would recommend Punta Cana based on when you're leaving. We were just in Cancun this past October (late October) and although it was hot, it wasn't HOT HOT. I know Punta Cana will be HOT HOT. It all depends what your expectations are. For me, heat and safety go hand in hand and Punta Cana checks off both of those.

I've been going to canncun very year since I was 8. We love it! My parents renewed their vows at club med, which is by far the best resort there. They're at the end, so you have beach and lagoon side.

I've never been to punta cana, so I have no comparison.

It depends on what you're looking for - nightlife atmosphere, chill, etc. We chose Punta Cana and will be staying at Excellence El Carmen (recommended by our travel agent). It's all inclusive and partially secluded, adult only resort. I did ask about hurricane season and they have not had a direct hit in years. We paid for the travel insurance just in case.

We are going to Cozumel, near Cancun, as we both scuba dive and the diving there is superb!! Is Cancun is anywhere near as amazing, and you plan on snorkeling, go there!

Both countries you have to be careful with. I'm Dominican myself and I already know what happens. It's not to offend anyone, but I would rather to to Punta Cana

Id fly to Cancun but stay in playa del carmen or tulum. Much nicer less touristy.

THIS! So true. Cancun is a bit more spring break vibe while Playa Del Carmen has a better vibe and I actually found that the beaches were better (less seaweed and rocks!)
