Candle ceremony including all of your guests...

Brandi ♥'s Chris, on October 25, 2010 at 8:31 PM Posted in Planning 2 21

I was looking for unique ways to include guests in your wedding ceremony. I came across a candle ceremony where everyone is holding a candle and and the first one is lit and the flame is passed on until it reaches the last person and the the bride and groom use that flame to light their ynity candle. I thought it was pretty neat, but was wondering if anyone has seen this done before and what your thoughts are on this ceremony. Thanks

I've seen this done at places other than a wedding. How big is your group of guests though? If you have 50 people or less, go for it. If you have more than that, this will take 20 min to light everyone's candles, and people will get uber board and the first ones will burn out.

There will probably be 100 to 200 people. I guess it's unrealistic to try it with that meny. =(

I haven't seen it but if I was doing an inside ceremony i'd definitely consider something like that, it's sounds very unique, I like that. I'm doing sand though. I guess you can do it with just the first guest on each row, that would be cool

@ Patricia, that's a great idea. I really want to do it for sure, that way people feel like they'r included. I think it would be beautiful. I know it will be too crazy if we included every guest though

I think it would be doable with 100-200 people. My church does this every Christmas eve. They have one candle, then light two pastor's candles. The pastors then light the ushers (2-4ish). Those ushers start lighting the aisle candles, and the light spreads from the aisle to the sides. In all, for 300-400 people, it only takes about two minutes to completely light the sanctuary. With a bit of planning, this would totally be possible.

Honestly as a guest I wouldn't want to participate. I would be afraid of setting something on fire or getting melted wax on myself. If people can refuse I say go for it.

Doing the first person in the aisle is a great idea, totally doable that way. People are still involved, but it won't take ages.

That sounds cool instead of just giving them the candles make paper candle holders so ppl won't get wax on them. Instead the wax will fall directly onto the paper.

@ Tiffany, thanks for letting me know that it's possible with a large amount of people. I am going to do it

@ Amy, I'm sure there will be some people who won't wanna do it. We'll just skip over them. I definately don't want to force anyone

@ Marie, we are on the same page. I was wondering what I could make to go under the candles so the wax doesn't spill. Thanks for the idea

There are candles with little cardboard holders that are used at services like the Christmas one described above. I imagine you could find them at a religious bookstore or perhaps a craft store.

Last year I officiated a wedding where we dimmed the lights while the guests held their candles. It was lovely.

You could have the people from the end of each row come up to where the main candle is and they can take turning light the big candle....that way they are all a part in somewaySmiley smile i like your idea!

Its a tradition to have this at my church at christmas too. They used little plastic cups around the candles that you could easily decorate to theme with your invites or other decor. Just have your ushers hand out the candles to those who want to participate. I will say it looks better at night than when there is alot of natural light coming in.

    Thanks for the ideas.

@ shdvl, that's a great idea. Our wedding will be in the afternoon, but maybe I can have the lights turned off so it will be semi dark or something. I can't wait. I'm excited to do this

Has anyone done this and if yes, how and when did they incorporate it in the ceremony?
