Candle vendor idea! Opinions needed!

Dani, on April 2, 2023 at 12:33 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 3

Hi! I have been dipping my toes into the idea of starting a business and becoming a vendor specifically for candles, and I need opinions and thoughts from people who are involved in the wedding planning process! I have been looking into wedding decor (future tripping about my own relationship) and was frustrated with how difficult it was to find one central place that could take care of all the candles and holders, and how few options there were in terms of customizing the colors, shapes, etc. My plan is to have a company where you can work with someone personally to customize a candle "plan" of sorts, with all handmade candles and prices that aren't over-the-top, while also renting out candle holders and offering simple candle sales for those who don't need something super involved. I am in the very beginning stages of planning, and I wanted to just put some feelers out and see if there were any thoughts/opinions/ideas that could be offered up. I was also wondering how many candles anyone had at their wedding, and how much they spent on them. I want to make sure my prices are on the lower end so I can meet more people's needs. Thanks!!!

Our florist included candles. They had a bazillion different styles, colors, types of candles and holders, etc. to choose from, probably more types of candles than I ever knew existed. I can see your idea working well for people who are DIY-ing their decor and/or aren't using a full service florist. But these days I think it's pretty standard for floral companies to serve as the central place that takes care of candles, and many, such as ours, had a clause in the contract about not using outside candle decor that wasn't rented through them. So you'd want to market to people not using a florist

I have used 100candles.com and Amazon for candles in the past. My one piece of advice is that if you do scented candles for weddings, make sure they are LIGHTLY scented. People who use candles for wedding decor typically use a lot of them and I've been to weddings where the "light gardenia scent" was eye watering. I am going with unscented votives for my wedding, but I know some people do go with scents.

I would consider adding a division for decor setup which includes labor and transport fees. Couples rarely want to set these up themselves and the venue or florist offers free supplies, rentals, and set-up service.
