Can’t afford a wedding/cheap Raleigh venues

Meghan, on May 24, 2020 at 10:20 PM Posted in North Carolina Planning 0 2
My FH and I are both teachers so we don’t make much. In the next year we will be spending money on moving and buying a house on top of the cost of our wedding and honeymoon. We want to keep our guest list at 50 which is leaving out extended family and some friends already. My parents have said they’d be able to contribute about $5k while my FH’s parents would prefer to give a monetary gift later on (which I’m fine with yet I don’t know how much it will be). If we have a $10k budget (which is small in the wedding industry), there’s no way we can afford $5k for the wedding, another $2-$3k for a honeymoon, and a down payment on a house. I’m torn. To save money I’d be hosting a micro wedding I don’t want. If we do something more expensive, I’d be making my family happy and I’d have the wedding of my dreams, but I’d be starting my marriage in debt. I have no clue what to do. HELP!

Yes it can definitely be done look for a vendor who has all inclusive packages like we choose the Hudson Manor in Louisburg NC it’s pretty much in Charlotte. Pick a hotel that will throw in the room for the couple for free if enough rooms are booked in the wedding block another way to save a few bucks. Enjoy many romantic nights in your new home and for go the stress and financial burden of planning a honeymoon so quickly plan a honeymoon/anniversary trip for next year. If you must get away go to some place like the Belamere in Cummings GA for the weekend it’s very romantic but budget friendly without sacrificing the honeymoon feel. Breathe and enjoy this beautiful time.

Hi Meghan! I definitely understand how you're feeling and felt the same way many times during planning. It's a lot of major (and majorly expensive) milestones happening at the exact same time!

I think it's all just about prioritization - and reminding yourself what you're saving for! It sounds like buying is house is #1 right now, so is there any flexibility with your honeymoon? Would you be open to a less expensive trip, or doing a mini-moon now and planning a bigger trip later?

Same thing with your wedding - if less than 50 guests feels like an unsatisfactory compromise, would you consider hosting your reception during a non-meal time (like mid-afternoon or late evening)? If you could do a cocktail style reception with a variety of hors d'oeuvres, desserts and cocktails that would reduce your catering costs significantly! (We've got some tips here: This is Why a Cocktail-Style Wedding Reception Rocks)

You should also check out these smaller venues who have lower rental rates: The Glass Box, Caffe Luna, JC Raulston Arboretum, The Winmore Tea Roo, The King's Daughters Inn, and Bridge Club!
