Can’t decide on a venue due to ceremony space! Help? :)

Hailey, on May 9, 2022 at 7:24 PM Posted in Planning 1 6
So we’re about to put the deposit down on a wedding venue and our choices are between two hotels. Both venues offer ceremony and reception, but the venue with the better package (that is also more affordable) only has an indoor ceremony space and I’m just not in love with the room. The other venue is probably less than $2000 more, but has an outdoor ceremony space. Both reception ballrooms look identical so no problem there!

The thing is that I had my heart set on an outdoor ceremony. FH is very go-with-the-flow and says he’ll be happy with whatever I pick, however he did say he likes the outdoor ceremony space better as well. We just feel conflicted because the venue with the indoor ceremony space has a package that is honestly pretty awesome in terms of what’s included, whereas the other venue with the outdoor ceremony space has packages that aren’t terrible but not great either.
What would you do? Our wedding plans have changed SO MUCH due to finances, guests, etc, and we just want to have a venue secured ASAP. All the other venues we looked at were unfortunately outside of budget, so it’s just down to these two now.
People have brought up good points when talking to me about it by saying we can just decorate the room to where it’s super pretty and it’ll distract me from the fact that I’m not too crazy about the little room in the first place, but I just don’t know!
Thoughts? Advice?
Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

That is hard. What exactly do each of them provide that you are debating between? Do you feel like you settling if you pick between either of them?

I’ve always had my heart set on getting married outside so I know what you mean! Do you have pictures of the two ceremony spaces? Does the one with an outdoor option also offer an indoor option in case there’s bad weather? Maybe try making a pro and cons list with FH and see if that helps 😊

I would vote for the place with the better package for one reason: Some people may disagree, but I’d say there’s a lot of risk with outdoor venues. If it rains, you’re kind of screwed unless you pay the big bucks for a tent. Also, not sure where you’re at, but if mosquitoes exist there, yikes. I heard about one wedding where so many guests left early because they were being bitten so much.
But it is your wedding though, so if you can make it work with the budget on the one with the outdoor space, and you notice you can’t stop keep thinking about that space, go for it 🙂

I’m getting married outdoors. Picked it for the outdoor ceremony. Much more difficult to set things up with vendors but I had my heart set on outdoors so worth it to me. If it rains then we get married in the barn 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ll certainly be disappointed but it is what it is. I say go for what makes you happy

I had my heart set on outdoors, so that’s what we did. I did make sure there was an indoor option so you have a plan B. That set, the venue we used had a great package that made planning so easy. So there is definitely value in that.

I would ask yourself what you want your pictures to look like 20 years down the road. Ultimately, if you’ll look back and say “man, we should have gone with the outdoor ceremony” then you should pick that one.

Does the venue with the outdoor space have an indoor back-up that you'd be okay with incase it rains? I've been to weddings where the bride had her heart set on an outdoor wedding, but the weather either forced the couple to use the default indoor space or the couple insisted on remaining outdoors and the guests and vendors were miserable. If you had to move the ceremony inside, would you still pick that venue or would it be preferable to go with the other venue with the better package?

FWIW I'm a firm believer in indoor venues, so I'd go with the one with the better package.
