Can’t lose these last 20 pounds!!

Lindsey, on February 10, 2021 at 6:36 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 16
So I got from around 220 to 165 after having my second child, but i’ve been stuck around 165 for months and months now. I’m only 5’3 so ideally I wanted to be about 20 pounds lighter but I can NOT break past this number!!! The past 3 weeks I’ve been really “strict”, eating in a calorie deficit and going to the gym 5 days a week doing about 20 minutes of cardio and 30-40 minutes on machines. I decided to finally weigh myself this morning and was super disappointed to see I haven’t lost ANYTHING.. My wedding is only 3 months away and I don’t want to hate the way I look in all of our pictures and videos... Any advice? (No keto please that just isn’t for me)

Try detox teas and intermittent fasting. It helped me tremendously.

You might not like what I have to say, but you may need to ease up on the deficit for a short while. Sometimes when the body has been dieting for too long it creates reserves so that you don't lose too much weight. Instead of mostly cardio, start weight training to gain muscle and strengthen your core. Your weight will go up, but more importantly your fat reserves will go down. Speak to a nutritionist and a strength trainer at your gym. They should be able to help you with your goals.

Both PP have valid ideas. I did intermittent fastings & it worked great for me. I still do 18 hr fastings around 4 days a week. Still talk with a member of the gym’s staff for help.

I agree with Samantha. You might be in a caloric deficit for too long. Increase your calories and keep up your gym routine for 2 weeks and see how you feel. And take progress pictures or measurements of the body! Sometimes the scale doesn’t move even though the body composition is changing.

Thanks everyone! I actually took a break for a few months from being in a calorie deficit and just recently started back a few weeks ago but I’m still not budging... I actually also intermittent fast but I’m not as strict with that as I should be so maybe I’ll start a better schedule with that.

I'm in the same boat! Went from 165 to 138 but just can't lose any more but I still defiantly have a big belly. I stopped my calorie deficit for 2 months and went back to a normal amount of calorie intake. Then I started again in january with the calorie deficit and put my fasting window into a 4 hour period. I cut out all bread and pasta because I was eating way too much of it. Then I added in 25 minute excerises 6 days a week. I have dropped down to 135 and keep seeing the numbers drop. You got this!

Ummm thst seems strange. How many calories are you eating? I would seek medical help if I'm consuming less than 1500 calories and exercising and nothing is coming off after weeks.

I used Iaso tea with a spoonful of their nutraburst vitamin shake in the morning. I lost about 40 lbs. I stopped using it but I’m going to start again so I can get under 200lbs.

Hey Lindsey, I GET you! I've been stuck at 154 for the past couple of weeks and I'm still trying to get another 20lbs off before my wedding. Since keto isn't your thing I won't say it, though it has been working wonders for me. I'm not sure what your general carb intake is like, but having a bit less of those will definitely help. Again, not saying go keto, just lighten the carb load a little. It may also help to switch up your exercise routine a little. If you've been doing the exact same thing over and over you may want to try adding more reps or weight. I haven't tried this personally, but a friend of mine started her day with an ice-cold glass of lemon water and she said that helped her. Whatever you try, I hope and pray for your success!

You most likely have been in a calorie deficit for too long. I have the same issue sometimes. I went from 200 to 144. But swear I was stuck at 160 for forever. Also if possible maybe try finding an online coach that can help give you macros or calories to follow. I know it is tough with all the information out there. Once I got a coach that was able to look at what I would eat day to day and then she told me like how many macros I needed I was able to push past it. Good luck!!!! 😊💖

Hi Lindsey, I know the frustration. My biggest advice to you as a certified nutrition coach and personal trainer is to ease up on the strict dieting. Perhaps allow yourself a few refeed days (lower fat, higher carbs) to get your metabolism going again. Do not overdo it with cardio either. This will only cause your body to go into a shock mode where all it wants to do is hold on to the little bit of fat it has left (energy stores). Try to not stress so much as this will only make weight loss more difficult, sleep well, drink water (at least half of your bodyweight in oz), eat protein at every meal, and aim for ~25 grams of fiber per day! I hope this helps

With respect to the calorie deficit: some people find it helpful to increase intake. This advice has never worked for me. Everyone is different, so you might want to try it out. If it is more comfortable, maybe try adding some higher calorie days and stick with your normal deficit on the other days.

Personally, I hit a plateau recently after eating healthfully & dropping about 18 lbs in 4 months. Since I was very happy with how I was eating and I thought it was sustainable & I felt great, I decided not to make any adjustments to lose the last 5 lbs. Ironically, 4 wks after I “gave up” trying, and just focused on maintaining what I was doing, the scale started moving again. And 2 wks after that, those last 5 lbs were gone. So, if you examine your diet and find that you can’t make any healthy adjustments without being miserable, maybe wait it out.
If your interested to know what helped me lose those 23 lbs: I eased into a Whole Foods diet & now eat very very few processed foods (definitely nothing that contains weird ingredients); I started to take saffron & Ceylon cinnamon supplements daily (some ppl have no response to these, but I found them very beneficial for stabilizing blood sugar. Obviously, before you take anything you should get a doctors approval...I did); I eat a small dinner (this helped tremendously...I have no idea why); and initially I logged every morsel into MyFitnessPal (until I got comfortable with how I was eating and could go it alone). The only exercise I get is 30 minutes of daily yoga & I try to take a 20 minute walk most days.
    Best of luck to you!
