Card Boxes.... Covered or Uncovered?

Annie Adams, on August 12, 2012 at 7:47 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 30

Is there any reason that people usually cover their card boxes?

Is it to look like you're not braggin about all your cards (presumably with checks in them)? Or is to to keep them safe? As if someone from your wedding would steal them?

Just curious. I was thinking it would match my decor better to have an open basket sitting out.

Suggestions? Tips? (Oh, thought! I dont want it to look like a tip basket Smiley winking )

I would not keep it open, for safety reasons. We've seen a few brides here who had cards and gifts disappear.

My first wedding we had a wire cage that was in the shape of a gift box that had a little lock with a key type thing.

This time I am just making a cardboard box and decorating it to look like a Portal Companion cube.

What is your theme? Maybe we can find you a cute box to DIY or buy somewhere?

It's Cherry Blossom themed with BBQ food. Very casual, very relaxed.

I dont know. For some reason I've just got this open basket idea on my head and cant get it out.

Would love some ideas if you really think it's safe to keep it covered.

I didnt' want a birdcage for the cards bec I feel it's noone's business how many cards we get..so we got cardboard that folds into a box so we can wrap it in wedding paper..and a ribbon to match my colors.

    I dont agree w spending $50 on a box in a store.

Safety reasons! A friend of mine that went to one of her friends wedding and she was telling me that the bride and groom decided on a birdcage card box and someone decided to pull the cards back out of the box (one of the guests) steal the money out of the card and put the card back together and back in the cage. I would be one pissed off bride!

If you wanted to DIY the first one I posted you could SO do it for cheaper, just saying. I have seen those "treasure chest" blank canvas ones at Michaels and AC Moore etc. Paint it white, rough it up with sand paper and i have seen cherry blossoms be painted using the bottle of a soda bottle and you could sketch the branches and make a stencil of your names and date.....

Love the craftyness that could be! good luck! Smiley laugh

I was just wondering about this too. I like the look of the open box better, and I was thinking that the closed ones looked like a deposit box almost. "Whoops, hope you didn't forget to sign it, 'cause you're not getting it back!" I had no idea that people would actually steal cards at a wedding. Who does that kind of thing? It makes it even worse that it is probably someone you invited, which means it's one of your friends that you'll still see in the future.

Please be careful, it is an open box, and sticky fingers can get in there.

Please have someone guard the gift table.

Read up on someone that had their money stolen

and someone that thought... It won't happen to me.... She had her GIFTS stolen!

I would just be sure to have someone guarding the gift table, and get those cards into a locked, safe, and secure location right before dinner starts.

    ~ happy planning ~

We are working bicycles into our theme for the wedding. I'm hoping to borrow an older bicycle from some friends, that has a rack on the back of it. I plan to have a simple basket on the bike for cards, but I'm going to have it strapped to the rack, and lock it!

When one of my cousins got married, they had all of their cards stolen from the reception. They were the only event in the building, but there was no security, and anyone could come in off the street. Makes me glad that my venue will be hiring a doorman for our event... I'll be giving him/her a guest list, so there won't be random people coming in. They'll also be able to keep an eye out for people leaving with stuff that shouldn't be.

I'm also doing the mailbox. We bought a new one for our house but haven't installed it so it's still in the box. (we moved in last December!) I figured I would paint our last name on it.

Not sure how crafty you are but maybe you could make it look like a grill. That way the grill top could have slits but it would be semi closed.

I would seriously double think my guest list if I was worried about guests stealing my gifts! I can't imagine anyone coming to my wedding who would do such a thing.

I'm doing a basket, I also don't agree with spending $50 on this.

We had an open box and no cards/gifts were taken that I know of. We seemed to have a pretty complete card box. We received more cards than I expected.

Our box was given to us as a gift (and was hideous, but it's the thought that counts and we dressed it up nice). There are definitely affordable ways to have a box if you want it.

You could always use a shoe box or a box of a slightly larger size that maybe you can get from the grocery store before they crush their boxes and cover it with wrapping paper or cloth that matches your decor. I think a cardbox isn't an impossible DIY project.
